Enter OSX....
To answer your comment, OSX can be locked down and audited a lot better & easier than windows can - since most of it is built on BSD.
Sure they still have bugs, every OS does. But there isn't a conspiracy around the whole bug reporting process. Most of the bugs found are found and reported (to places like bugtraq) by the open source community with fixes available within hours.

It's Microsoft's strategy that brought them to this financial success. This is how they can have complete products in such short periods and are always ahead of the game. I was assigned to read articles that talk about their software engineering process, in the Software Engineering class i was taking. They may not have got-nothing-better-to-do opensource supporting code hacker nerds all over the 3rd wold countries, but they do have very systematic daily builds on their projects where they code and fix at the same time, which involves a lot of user interaction as well. They release alpha's to selected people and keep updating the system daily according to the user responses. When they reach a treshold of stability, they release the final product.. They could have waited a lot longer and fix more bugs before the release but that wouldnt let them eliminate their competitors like this maybe. They have improved their standards after they were able to capture almost the whole market. Since Win95, on every single product they made, they have raised their quality thresholds before the release of the final product. Win XP is one quality piece of OS in my opinion and their next one will be even better. They may have questionable strategies on how they try to keep the whole market to themselves, but they'll need the strength to keep increasing the quality of the products.
having said all that.. i still would prefer *nix OS for my webserver, since it suits better for that purpose. MS's primary target was home PC's, and thats exactly where I use WinXP. One OS cannot be the best for all purposes. Microsoft will need to grow even more to be able to capture most of the market in other areas such as webservers, database systems, distributed computing etc... Companies like IBM have attempted to do all that, but now they keep falling behind more and more everyday. Now they are just trying to do some move in the areas which Microsoft has not targeted yet.
this shit is all political.. but i find big companies very inspiring.. i rather discuss about this subject than the bullshit going on with the world politics.
