I think it's more to do with how believable the fantasy is. Personally I think the best horror movies are the ones when the "bad guy" is just a regular guy. If it's a monster then it's unbelievable and looses its effect. Look at the popularity of characters like Hannibal Lecter, Norman Bates and plenty other psychos.

There's a lot of assumptions in this post. Most if it is bullshit though. The market is larger than this and assuming it is not is leaving a lot of money on the table.
