How Many "fetishes" are Webmaster gimmicks?

Balloons, plushies, etc. Those aren't real fetishes.. not in the way something like bdsm or ponyplay is. How many of the "fetishes" that are now mainstream were webmaster gimmicks to trump up surfer clicks? When will the madness end? :P

Ok, I'm done.

No.. because they aren't "fetishes" on the same level as these hardcore fetishes that have been around for well.. CENTURIES in most cases.. They were invented, for the most part, by webmasters.. Now I'm not saying they haven't developed into more.. but I'm saying that's how they started.

I don't get the whole balloon niche either, who want their pubic hair to stand on end with static electricity?

M.I.L.F. is kind of a fabricated niche...not quite mature, not quite model, not quite amateur...

They might not have been around for long, but now with the Internet it's easier for people to find more people who are into the same things....

Also, with the Internet in it's current form it's easy to become attracted to a certain niche. I never imagined seeing a picture of a girl humping a teddy bear would turn me on, but it does.

But those have only been since the last few years when they've become "niches". Before the internet people in the fetish world would have laughed you off the street if you suggested either one.

And why would they of been laughed at? because people that didnt have that fetish didnt understand it. And I dont believe the balloon or plushie fetish has only been around for a few years.

Rubber has only been used since the mid-1800's or so. And plushies.. uh.. self-explanitory? I've spent a long time researching this, and both of these niches are "new" inventions. Generally associated with the internet.

Because true FETISHESTS don't take stuff like that seriously.. or didn't until more recent years.

Im sure these fetishes existed before internet came, but then the people who had these fetishes kept it to themself, knowing that other people would most likely laugh at them if they told about it.

With the online comunities Internet brought, people with the most "strange" fetishes discovered that they weren't alone having these fetishes. It became more accepted. But thill I think they wouldn't tell people "on the street" about it, there are still alot of people that haven't even heared of the fetish and would never understand...

Perhaps, but as I say I've been doing some intensive research into the birth of some of the fetishes that people accept today, and you'd be QUITE amazed as to the origins of them. It's amazing the amount of "fetishes" have become... accepted.. since the internet became prominent. Hit me up on icq I'll share some of my research with you. 3522039

A funny request we got once. A guy asked if one of the cam girls could do a scene smoking a cigarette while sitting on the toilet taking a piss and holding it to her mouth between her toes.

like fuck they're not real fetishes. Thats like saying viruses didn't exist until 1700. I know a guy who is absolutely 100% petrified of balloons gets panic attacks when he sees them, can't go into shopping centres etc. psychological reactions to objects from your past is a natural response to the original triggers, for some people there are sexual responses instead of fear based ones depending on the circumstances, I would bet several large wads of cash people have had balloon fetishes from the day the balloon was invented, just because they didn't run down the street in victorian times yelling out their "perversions" doesn't mean it didn't exist.. so the internet brought the rare"freaks" together.. doesn't mean it invented them. I could think of a micro niche that there is no site out there for and build it, just because i might get some member to that site doesn't mean they weren't unknowing members of a rare "club" their whole lives. There was just no meeting place for them.

Okay I'm not even halfway down that page and I'm having second thoughts about giving ANY toys to my sons... especially since one of my sons absolutely loves to destroy anything he can get his chubby little hands on!

LadyMischief, I honestly don't understand how you can say that a webmaster comes up with a fetish. It's just common sense that if people are wanting to see this content, then they've been wanting to see it for a long time and there are more like them. If I liked balloons "in that way" I certainly wouldn't go telling anyone about it... but by god on the internet you can be anonymous and proudly proclaim your latex love on Geocities, and whaddya know, some other popper comes along and says "Hey, I like balloons that way too!" and pretty soon there's a little club of balloon lovers fighting over whether the poor things should be popped or not...
Just because a webmaster hasn't caught on to it and made a site about it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, or didn't exist before the site was made.
There are still THOUSANDS of fetishes out there that we haven't caught onto yet.

Shemp and Orgasmics just made XXXHair - does that mean that they've telepathically coerced a bunch of men into liking long hair, or does it simply mean they've made a site FOR men who ALREADY like long hair on a woman?

As for research - I don't put much into that. Sure, it's easy to document things like BDSM and leather - at times it was "elite" to be a little rough with your playmate (Marquis De Sade, anyone?) - and besides, people look cool in leather. But people look damn stupid in diapers - so who's going to run around in the 18th century demanding that the aristocrats put on big turd-catchers to tickle each other's fancy?
A fetish is an emotional response to a physical object - and those have been around as long as there have been people - documented or not.

To think otherwise is simply giving "webmasters" way too much credit, or getting a bit too pompous with your own ingenuity at discovering fetishes.

lol. A true fetishist is someone who sexualizes an inanimate object, period.

Certain fetishes may have only found expression on the internet recently, but to suggest they are webmaster invented and not real fetishes is laughable.

You can't make someone fetishize balloons by building a loon site.

To apply your nutty chain of logic to another field.. there were no heart attacks before the mid-20th century because doctors didn't have the knowledge necessary to diagnose them.

Okay yeah I've taken the heat and flames for this thread.. I think I presented it wrong. A lot of fetishes are yes.. fetishes.. any object/person/bodypart etc can be the object of a fetish.. However a lot of these fetishes seem to be taking root from the internet. I wasn't trying to be insulting, i was more curious as to what other fetishes got their starts that way..

And I am perhaps narrow-minded, but I guess I'm stuck on the long-term fetishes. I've never really been able to grasp the appeal of some of the things that are fetishes these days... or at least, mainstream fetishes.

Oh, and I should also mention, that webmasters DO tend to cling to anything they think will sell well and make it their own..perhaps that is part of the ... misconception? I mean I understand the motivation.. why does anyone do business.. money. But the dynamics of how it develops.. sometimes from something innane is.. amazing.

the internet allows the one of two people in each community that has a particular fetish to find each other and appear as a larger group. This is how the BBW community began to grow and I am sure it is the same with fetishes.

I found sites about plushies way back when the web first came up and they were totally non-profit sites. The 'net just lets us hear about these fetishes and any webmaster with a good eye would pick up on them and run.

from http://sexuality.org/l/fetish/plushies.html:

"'alt.sex.plushies' is a newsgroup for adults who have special personal feelings for plush stuffed animals (and plush puppets, too). It's also a place where people talk about 'fursuits'. alt.sex.plushies was newsgrouped on August 9, 1994."

There are fetishes for almost every possible thing which can in some way be a part in one's sexual development/childhood. It has been that way for ages. Saying webmasters invented these things is rather ignorant, in my opinion.

Damn.. I must have lead a sheltered life.. all these years in the net porn biz and I never came across plushies sites before..

At last I have found a home!!!

But seriously.. I tend to agree that webmasters are responsible for quite a few fetishes on the net.. I'm sure many sit around trying to think of some new bizarre niche because we all know niche sells.. even if nobody has ever heard of the niche before.. it has to be pretty far out there to have not been done before..

Human nature I think ensures that there will always be people that are interested in any niche/fetish even if just out of morbid curiosity at first.. it may later develop into an addiction.. we can always hope anyway..

Basically its all down to marketing - we convice people that they want our shit (no pun intended) even if they don't.. works in all sectors of society, not just porn/fetish.. for example just look at those golden turds that are selling like hot cakes in japan these days! Was there really a golden turd fetish before it was launched on an unsuspecting public??

A fetish is the sexualization of a generally non-sexual object, or act.

More technically, someone with a *true* fetish, in the psychological sense, is someone who cannot be sexually gratified without their fetish present. This is clearly too strong for this discussion, so we're left with the first one.

Now, it is important not to confuse "Fetish" with BDSM. A lot of people do, because "fetish style" means dressing up like BDSM fetishists tend to. However, there are plenty of fetishes that aren't as edgy or dark.

Smoking, feet, spanking, adult babies, baloons, pantyhose, ponygirls, trampling, etc... All fetishes. Can you draw a line around some of them because they are new, or because *you* never heard of them until the internet? Seems weird to me.

There are genuinely people out there who find girls with baloons sexy. I bet there are even true fetishists out there with that fetish, just like "feet", "smoking", "dominance", or any other traditional fetish. You're being too arbitrary.

You know I had thought it that last night but, I was too tired to debate with her about this - it was 2am and I was exhausted.

Very well said indeed...two thumbs up for you

being a cam girl i get the fucking freaks that ask for the most bizarre things... and they are so detailed its sorta crazy. i have quite a few guys that like to pretend they are really tiny and are lost in my cleavage..and they keep shrinking and i keep growing larger (ever try to portray that onlive cam..lol) the bug squashing guys, the cigg smoking freaks, the anal freaks(i send them elsewhere)the guys that totally get off on how far a womens pussycan be stretched out ( i think these guys have some serious issues with birthing)

i agree that alot of these fetishes have been around for along time..the internet has let the fetishers express themselves anonymously without exposing their outright freakiness to the public who would not understand.

I prefer the term "deviant", thank you very much.

I like freak..i have long since embraced my freakdom. I would never want to be a non-freak now. See if a non-freak does something unusual they are usually stopped and asked to explain and justify. However, if a freak does something similar people will just shrug their shoulders and go 'never mind them they are just a freak.' - no justification needed.

Damnit, Ive never been followed by a giant fantasy guy!

I love fetishes. But, how I define it, or how it got started has no meaning to me as a webmaster or an amateur.

I just got involved in the looner community. Not so much because I am sexually attracted to balloons, but I love figuring out why other people think. If it happens to be something that im interested in, I might go more deeply into it. If not, i'll say "hey thats really cool, i can take that advice and go make some pictures you woudl like." I did that with BDSM, I hated pain, but hey, I like canes and cupping (awesome pictures, BTW)

I know a guy that has a cast fetish (or fantasy, he doesnt need a cast to get off) I have seen this niche for a few years, wondered what it was all about. He explained it in a way that actually made sense, on several levels.
