SEO has changed since 2008...

Hi there. I'm in for +10 years now, and my gut feeling is that a lot has changed, not for the better. Spamming/flooding (on all levels, all platforms, all niches) hasn't stopped. If you look at "SEO" articles (non-adult niche) for example, it's always the same: "the more text, the better". Articles with lots of trash content rank better than quality articles. It's about gathering traffic in the short run only, NOT about creating lasting values.

Google is a kraken. It is. It's getting worse and worse. The magic word is "aggregation". They simply collect EVERY data monade there is and present other peoples' then re-combined properties/contents as their own! Thats robbery. One of my mainstream projects failed because of this tactic. The big "don't be evil" company is stealing. From everyone. Sorry, but playing against each other on THE G is not business.

Tactics. Thats another key phrase: What has "business" become when parties play the "burnt soil" game (much like intelligent agencies). It's about proxy wars, weakening "the enemy", staying on top, win at all costs. And the big ones can hit their "rivals" the hardest. Ethics? There are no ethics no more.

It really has become a farce. "Don't be evil" is feeding on our diligence, our business tactics, our business models and our inventions, our efforts and time, undermining our modesty and values. Much like a HUGE psychic vampire. And no, cognitive dissonance ('i don't care as long as it doesn't concern me!') will not work here. Not in the long run, which is less than five-ten years from now (in the AI age).

Bottom line:
If you play fair, you will be erased from the equation sooner or later. Play foul and you will be erased from the equation sooner or later. End game.

Any comments on that?

shareholder supremacy...every company that goes public turns evil...shareholders prefer dealmakers and not caretakers...

Try advertising instead of SEO.

Much easier than keeping up with Google.

All you need, is a nice mousetrap.

If you can turn $1 into $2.

You can become filthy rich.

It has changed since then and I do see a lot of the aggregation you talk about which I hate. Bing does that too.

Just build your sites anyway and use other means like advertising, social media etc... to drive traffic to it.

Search Engines were always a trap.
SEO and SEM is a symbiotic relationship.

Consider the real world bricks and mortar location -- you have to pay for the high traffic real estate, pay a percentage to the shopping mall owners or heavily advertise a hard to find location to get the traffic.

The Internet still offers low cost startup locations. Business strategy really hasn't changed -- tactics have changed. People were spamming and scamming on the Internet since day 1.

I love SEO. I don't miss the days when people in my industry were offering 1500 directory submissions, 300 edu links and all that crap.

I think the key for SEO is diversification in all things; clients, strategies and having backup channels as well.

I feel that SEO is practically the same as its always been. Content, Updates & Backlinks ... The only thing that's changed are the holes in the algorithm used to manipulate SEO throughout the years.

Everytime I read one of these "doomsday" predictions I can choke.... Not sure if with laughter and or my own vomit ....

I have all what according to everybody saying I should have ..... Good original content ( VOD no membership) high conversion rate, 30 % returning visitors....... And we are making good living ....yet I should do 4 x better.

My Alexa stagnates around 200 K
My poorly set up GA shows about 20 visitors on the site at any time of the day.

And i cannot find anybody reliable who can tell me what if any SEO I should do, what if any traffic I should buy, or what should I do to get 10,000 uniques/ day instead of 2500, how to set up GA properly etc...

There is a gold on the end of this rainbow but I have no clue how to reach it.

And please do not try to explain to me what Google rank is it is akin to explaining a big bang theory ( and not the TV show)..

Anyway sorry for this rant but I am frustrated from all these experts.....

In business I am used to it is a lot simpler : I build you a widget to your specifications and do it in x months and you will pay me x dollars everytime a section of the widget is completed, once it is completed I will have all the cash agreed to and you will have the widget to your specifications"

Why this does not work in this business ? Beats and frustrates me.

It's good to have a clean site, good bounce rate, TOS, content etc.... and google and everyone else will tell you that that is all you need.

Wrong.

SEO is a game. You have to be fully immersed in that game and continually test and update your knowledge all the time.

I don't know the secrets because I run a site like you do and it takes all of my time.

But people like WiredGuy above make money doing SEO. No big site with lots of fancy content that visitors come back for time and again. He just sits there and plays with things - many domains, different types and amounts of links, tinkering here and there. If you're not doing that all day long then you'll never beat the SEO game unless you have $$$ CASH to burn through buying quality links and even then, it may only be temporary.

Thanks for your reply. My business is making good content and running an honest business. I do not play shell games, ponzi schemes, reusing others shit, bla bla...I guess I will be stagnating until I retire....

I have the following stats
Bounce 27 %, average duration 4.58 min, pages session 4.38 ....Alexa tells me I have over 200 incoming links, GA tells me I have over 1500 daily referrals....I cannot even figure any of this shit out, I am too busy making content.

If I ever find anybody who can navigate me thru all this crap $$$$ are no problem.

Google is a pain in the arse and for something so important to business, its lack of any real support is farcical.

They have a forum for webmasters which you may find useful to check out and ask the odd question but be aware that nobody has a clue what really goes on, if the "experts" on there dont know the answer to your question they'll simply tell you that you're doing something to fiddle google. Everyone thinks they know what to do but nobody does really.

Some dickwad "expert" on there told someone they had been de-indexed by google because they "are using all capitals in their H1 headers and this was clearly an attempt to fiddle ranking"!
