What do you think of this machine for video editing?

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...?v=glance&s=pc

do you think it's powerful enough to do work in Premiere without problems?

My current machine is crashing all the time when I try to edit.

I suppose you're going to be editing Windows Media files, because if you aren't editing for WMV then you would be better off getting yourself a mac for video editing. For the price you are looking to spend as well you would have a far superior editing system than a PC anyday.

They'll be mostly mpeg's.

I can get this machine for free with my ars points and they don't have any macs in their store.

what kind of mac do you recommend to do video editing?

Ah hell yeah now a 17" powerbook is the shit for real, but not everyone can drop that much money. I mean hell for under $1 g these days you can get a sweet little iBook with Firewire and a free copy of iMovie on it and you got a portable mini movie studio right there that will kick a PC's ass, unless you're going top of the line, but if you're going top of the line then get a Dual G4 Powermac and you'll be pimpin for real.

Ahh ARS points, I understand. Honestly you could video edit with a basic mac even at this point, you can find a refurbished with the same warranty as new eMac G4 for like $699 and that's a machine and 17" monitor all wrapped up in one. However the more money you put into your machine the faster you will be able to do FX and rendering, but honestly even a basic mac can kick some ass video editing and iMovie covers 90% of what most people need to do and it's free and easy as hell to use. Hit me up on ICQ if you ever want more mac info, my # 173847572

MAC SUX

I have build Videoediting mashines for broadcast and production the last 3 years now, and i STILL hear the same thing; "mac are better" - they arent!!!!. Im not gonna go into details about it, but read this

Mac vs. PC
http://www.digitalvideoediting.com/2...macvspciii.htm

What kind of editing do you do? Let me know and I'll guide you in the right direction.

Just basic editing. I'm going to be buying large mpeg's and cutting them down into teaser clips, and filming on a little sony camcorder and editing that footage.

great article, i dont have the budget for those high end machines though

I guess you showed your ass on that post didn't you? Too bad you link an article that is months old and is tested using Adobe After Effects. Any professional doing video editing will tell you quickly that Final Cut Pro is a far far superior product that is more full featured and kicks After Effects ass. As far as video editing you are asking a man to compare $4,000 computers when he is looking to get something possibly substantially lower in price to do video editing. So you've missed on all your points and if you're making video machines for broadcast and production and they aren't using mac you must be in fucking russia or the middle of nowhere arkansas where they don't know what a mac is. Major studios, artists, musicians, publications, and the list goes on use Mac and there must be a reason.

typical response. i operate one of the largest video sites out there, and everything is done on mac.

i'd never go so far as to say any operating system sucks. i enjoy free bsd and mac os. success is the true measure.

The maskine on E-bay Will do the job.

Get Premier (its bundeled with Cleaner) You can learn to do "batch jobs" in no time, and just;
- load in one large movie
- Deside how large/long the clibs should be
- export it, and it builds "X" amount of small files for you.

For the cam, you can use Premier to edit the raw material

I would buy a CHEAP movie bordset like Matrox rtx 100 or Pinnacle DV500 WHEN YOU HAVE THE MONEY

AVIS is sold because people (the users) are used to the interfaces. It REALLY cant do shit compared to the other midrange editing solutions (Final Cut Pro, and Incite) If you are used to run your editing work on a MAC, you SHOULDENT move to a INTEL/AMD station if you dont give yourself the time to learn the new stuff.

I have spent 3 months on Denmarks largest Television station, trying to make people move from the SHIT avid to Discreet Edit and Incite. They LIKE the new system, but are affraid to move to a new platform.

thanks I was just wondering how fast the machine you edit with is because I dont want to buy one that's too slow.

And I'm doing something for a completely different audience from yours and on a shoestring budget, I'm no competition to you.

Mac have an advantage when you go ABOVE 2GB files, but then it is slowed by the rest of the hardware.. MAC can be used in a batch rendering farm, because its stable, but for editing, it just dont do the job anymore

I said ADVANTAGE!!!

The PC is based on a 32bit structure, and the Mac on a 64Bit

The way programs is compiled, you reach the PROGRAM limitation around 2 GB files. (the 32 architecture cant HANDLE ONE LARGE 2GB FILE WITHOUT BREAKING IT UP= SLOW DOWN PROCESS)

Can we got some input here that isnt pissing?

How bout something like... A breakdown on whether or not a p4 is better than a Mac at....

Design Apps (Photoshop Illustrator, Flash, etc).
Hardcore Video Editing (Heavy Processing Times)

Etc Etc?

I need to get another machine next month, I'd use this one for gaming, but... Really wanna get a Mac in some facet.

Used to have the Black G3 400 Powerbook a few years back, was real nice, but... at that time I couldnt do shit on my windows network, since the company I worked for had built their own software.

I have to tell you bro, benchmarks are not fact. There are benchmarks that show macs kick ass and there are benchmarks that show pc's kick ass. It's all subjective. However what anyone knows is the majority of the creative industries use Mac's because they are stable productive and they look fucking cool.

I edit video all the time and have a PC and a Mac and I would only trust the important stuff to the Mac. No way would I do anything of value on a PC anymore, you just can't trust them. I push both machines to their limits and I just can't get the Mac to blow up. The PC, well, crashing one of those is a piece of cake.

I need to get another machine next month, I'd use this one for gaming, but... Really wanna get a Mac in some facet.

Used to have the Black G3 400 Powerbook a few years back, was real nice, but... at that time I couldnt do shit on my windows network, since the company I worked for had built their own software.
Rest assured Drew if you get a mac you'll be in good shape for sure. If you ever go to a studio or any creative production house you are likely to see macs being used as well as Final Cut Pro. The system is more stable, the overall ownership experience is superior because the products you get to add to your system just work without any bullshit hassles. You will be more than happy that you made the transition back without a doubt and anyone who does serious creative work will agree.

lol.
the "timeline" was edited on a mac, yes.
BUT - Its because they use the "metadata" workflow, when they do all the editing on a client, that sends the "metadata" to the serverpark that does all the hard work (usually a Flint, Smoke, Infernal or one of the other SGI solitions that cost above $10 mill)

i can give you 10 more links to benchmark tests, you dont impress me.

as I said, i have friends who are professional videographers, ranging from a snowboarding videographer pal who is into documentary type snowboard shoots for years.

my other friend films natureand last videos he sent me were quictime panarama videos from alaska him in a canoe on the water surrounded by glaciers smoking a joint.

im not into video, i do audio.

ive been using mac since before the performas came out, and been using macs for electronic music production in studios since 93. shit i still have a 6400 mac running a black and white cam in the studio hahah

i only go with what i know, im not here to prove which is better, but i know people who are using these machines, are using mac. from dr dre to megadeth done with a mac.

i have a mac g4 running digidesign pro tools with 2 180 gig hard drives in an ATA approved flight case on wheels that even holds the monitor that is rented out for 500 bucks a day, show me someone doing that with a pc.

<img src=http://www.overmindesign.com/images/mac.jpg border="1">

every time i edit audio on a cinema display digital audio set up, theres no question in my mind where the flavor is.

I know, I hit the wrong key - you know that the "S" and "D" key is besides each other right?

Nobody has addressed the most negative thing in the proposed system: With Windows (I have no experience on Macs outside of some college graphics courses so I can't comment on that), one hard drive, regardless of how large it is, is not going to give good performance with video work. You must have at least two hard drives- a system drive and a drive devoted solely to video files.

Also, Compac is not the easiest system to add anything onto to it, including a secondary hard drive.

Ahh yeah brother the macs are winning out again. I wish we had more mac debate on this site, or on my site for that matter, but hell I'm always willing to debate an uneducated Microsuck victim.

What if you just partition the drive? Is that a solution or do you really need 2 seperate physical drives?

TRy to visit CeBit next time, you will se how small MAC is in the REAL business

Im in the Broadcast and Broduction bussiness - Not Homeuser, I know how the business works, and what products they use.
I can give you a list of more than 200 happy customers that bought our turnkey products in 2002 (only 5% of them is MAC customers) ( I keep saying "our" but the company isent mine anymore ) But its not about that.

Marcus Asked if the PC did the job, and the answer is "yes"
