They think chargebacks will be higher, as the shorter the trial, the higher the chargebacks.

I actually think chargebacks will be lower, automatic renwals of the 3 day trial is often forgotten, manually saying YES after a 30 minute trial is a well made choice.

Give every ip a one time 30 minute chance of watching the content, have them fill out everything except cc info, after 30 minutes they can either join or leave.
Join -> give cc info
leave -> bye bye

Maybe if everybody wants to have this feature added, they will be convinced to at least try it.

PayAsYouClick could be used to give "nearly free" trials of any length over ten minutes, to an existing paysite that you are selling subscriptions to. The member area could be protected by whatever processor you wanted, PayAsYouClick would just do the trial.

If you made the trial over 50 cents, it would only be available to PayAsYouClick account holders who had already topped up their account with real money (rather than the $2 signup bonus). That proves they've got a credit card and are prepared to use it, but they don't have to put the card number into your site for the trial - major barrier overcome there.

Then if they like the trial, and they see you're not scamming, they'll pay for your subscription through CCBill etc.

Of course, this is only any good if your content is good enough for them to want to sign up once they've seen it. If you're relying on people not being fast enough to cancel, we wouldn't be any help.
