Why is domain not working as domain.com, but works as www.domain.com?

What do I need to do to the server to make it recognize both formats of my domain name?

It gives a DNS error when typed like "domain.com", works fine like "www.domain.com" and it gives a page not displayed when typed like "http://domain.com".

What should I do?

I'd say the best start would be hiring a tech guy

Can you resolve both versions of the domain? If so, your apache config is fucked up.

1 - your webserver is not configured to answer the "domain.com" header, but only the "www.domain.com" header, ask the tech to fix it

2 - DNS error with your domain holder

Set a wildcard to your DNS and then add this line to you virtual host container:

ServerAlias *.domain.com

should look like:

PHP Code:
 <VirtualHost domain.com>
DocumentRoot /path/to/your/htdocs
ServerName www
.domain.com
ServerAlias
*.domain.com
</VirtualHost

I can tell you details if you post that virtual-host container here.
