They did not mention that it's airborne. Although one might think that the health care system is hiding something from the public. Like everyone that got infected in the apartment building, if it's not airborne, I don't know how everyone could've got infected at the same time.

Do you have a link where they are mentionning it is airborne? Because if this is airborne, it's a completely different game. All those quarantined people and the for everyone in contact with the infected people would've been useless.

No.. It is spread in droplets of saliva and mucous, such as when someone sneezes, or by direct contact with such bodily fluids. Therefore, it's not considered an "airborne" viral agent.

Quotes from an article:

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/030401/1/39n4i.html

"HONG KONG -- A deadly pneumonia outbreak that has killed at least 62 people and infected some 1,700 more could be spread through the air, making it far more contagious than previously thought, a senior US health official told CNN Tuesday.

"Under certain circumstances, at least, it may be airborne," said Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control in the US.

Health officials previously said that they believed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) was transmitted by coming into contact with "droplets" from a sneezing or coughing patient.

"We are seeing large outbreaks, for example in an apartment complex in Hong Kong, where airborne transmission certainly is a possibility," Gerberding said. "

Possibility.. Takes a while to confirm if something is airborne. Besides, it's far too easy to transmit any type of diseases.. like I said before.. Child with it sneezes into hand, touches elevator button, everyone else pushes button..you see the cycle...

Well I think it is premature to cancel a trip when it is in June. it will probably be gone by then.
Strict measures are already in place at the Toronto airport and quarantines are in effect.

The numbers are still low.

If you are afraid of this, you should still consider West Nile a threat.

Most healthy people shrug it off. Influenza is deadly if you are in poor health, young, or elderly; this is in the same division.

We're flying to Phoenix tomorrow, and I'm feeling pretty good about it. Knock on wood and alla that, but come on--getting sideswiped by a shitty driver in an Escalade on the 10 is far more likely than picking up some rare asian airborne sickness on a plane. I highly doubt there will be a ton of people transferring from Hong Kong to a Burbank-to-Phoenix puddle jumper.

I'm not about to visit a rooming house in Thailand right now, but I'm sure as hell not gonna pass up free booze and topless women.

Please take what I say with as many grains of salt as u wish.
Since I'm not a doctor.

SARS kills fewer people then most cases of the flu, and alot less then car accidents.

Toronto has been afftected greatly due to it very large asian population. The areas affected inthe city seem to be focused in those area. To the best of my knowleged, the deaths due to SARS have been people that where older, read not old in WM's years but old in real life.

The only people infected have been either returning from aisa, or medical professionals that worked with the people returned from asia and there families.

My recomendation for anyone concerned is to take the same safety methods with with any cold/flu outbreak
wash your ahnds alot and don;t let people sneeze on ya. ALso read facts from sources, not jsut news reports, whose job it is to sell papers not inform the people

IE the CDC web site I'll find the link to the Canadian CDC site where u can read facts and make informed decisions.

Cheers!

Don't worry about the silly virus. The article above says that 1700 people were infected and 63 died. That is less than 4%. Not really something to lose sleep over.

Besides, 1700 people infected in hong kong is not a whole lot. How many people live there with little or no personal space? If you haven't been there or seen it, imagine Times Square in NYC going 24/7.

That's true..but the bothersome thing according to the latest news I have read on it is say someone sneezes/coughs on a doorknob for example. They are saying now that this is one hearty virus, and has the ability to stay alive for THREE hours exposed like that. Thus easy for someone to touch the doorknob, stick finger in their mouth etc. That's why they advise EVERYONE to wash their hands a LOT!

Btw..just an fyi..hiv, which is by far more dangerous..can only live in exposed air for a few secs. Weird how different virus's can be.
