Which .357 magnum revolver?

Needs to be light, 4" - 6" barrel.

http://www.taurususa.com/products/pr...egory=Revolver

This is my first pick. S&W also makes nice .357 revolvers, but they are a bit heavier. Anyone know of anything similar?

I've considered a pistol, but since this will be mostly for hiking and backpacking (I run into loose dogs & black bears a few times a year) it needs to be reliable in less than sterile conditions.

The Tracker looks good - have you tried it out yet? Titanium is light but you do feel the bite a bit more than with stainless.

I would probably go with a Smith just because I like the smooth trigger action.

I shot a Glock 33 at the range last week. Its their lightest .357 and weighs about 4oz more than the Taurus loaded. There is also the reliability & cleaning thing.. more moving parts = more places for dust to creep in and fuck up.

No, but I've tried one of these..

http://www.smith-wesson.com/Products...sc/m360kit.htm

It was almost too light.. made me nervous.. and you are right about the snap. Been told the fact that the Taurus barrel is ported will help a bit.

glocks are crap, and kinda dangerous for the calibers above 9mm.

Yeah, I would look at a stainless S&W not a titanium. I would avoid Glocks (btw the Glock 33 fires a .357SIG - different round than the .357 Magnum - used in revolvers).

My fave .357 was the Smith and Wesson Model 19 with short barrel.

Very nice weapon.

Gutter, look into the Taurus Titanium seven-shot revolver. The first all-titanium target-sighted sport and field revolver.

4 inch barrel, dull gray finish, and supposed to be pretty durable under nasty conditions. Runs about $650.

Assuming that you are atleast 6' tall and weigh over 165 lbs, Glock 30.

Or go for my 'pussy gun' (search)

My mind might be failing, but your last post was about guns was about CA laws....did you finally correct that issue?

Repeating what I'm being told as I can't remember this info (because I could care less about it) These revolvers will take wildcat loads that sends shivers thru S&W and Colt and still hold together with no problems.

He has a stainless 6" Security Six (Out of production) that he has always shot with jacked up loads (whatever that means exactly), and its as tight in the cylinder as the day he bought it. He blew out a colt and S&W using the same loads.

He says Taurus is ok for dope dealers since they don't care where the round goes. I've seen him shoot this thing at pretttyyy long distances and he hits what he's aiming at. He's hunted anything from rabbits to deer with it and brought them home. ;-)

I'vr shot quite a few kinds of revolvers and other guns having lived on a farm for years, but I like this one he has better than any of the others I've shot. Even *I* can shoot it accurately where I never could shoot revolvers well compared to pistols.

Ruger is always a good brand to consider especially anything they put out in stainless. If you're looking for a really reliable revolver you might want to check out a 5" Stainless Redhawk. Don't think know if they come in .357 but I have owned one in .41 mag and .44mag. Both outstanding, and as far as stopping power it's hard to beat .41 or .44 mag.

Just my opinion....I have shot a few of them and don't care for them at all. Same goes for the Glock.

I have mixed feeling about Ruger. Their guns are pretty solid and good shooters for the most part but the machining is pretty raw. I still own a 6" Stainless GP100 and it is accurate as hell. Can't beat the $ 4 $ value of the one IMO.

Taurus started off about 15 years ago when one of the old Beretta factories went under. Some of the workers, etc... got together and started it back up making handguns under the Taurus name. Their first biggest seller was a copy of the Beretta 9mm (since they were set up for it). I had one way back then. It sucked. Their metalergy was inferior.

Thanks, I've gotten rid of quite a few over the years. (I used to be gung ho)

That 22 winchester pump is a collectors piece and that little .25 ACP is pretty old. My grandad left it to me after he died. he got it in WWII from a German officer he had taken prisoner.

and that old single shot 20 gauge on the bottom I've had since i was about 14 I think.

Is the Taurus 9mm with laser sight still in production? I found it in San Fran and when I went back the next week to buy it the dealer said they were discontinued.

Usually the high sierra and the state parks near here. I go to Yosemite alot. The cable route up Half dome from the valley floor is a great run/hike.. 18 miles RT, with 1 vertical mile of elevation gain/loss.

Last year I tried to solo the John Muir Trail in 10 days.. 220 miles up and down over the yosemite, ansel adams, and kings canyon wilderness areas. Had to bail out 3/4 of the way because of a throat infection. Probably try that again sometime.

Going here in the fall to climb and fish the twin lakes area.

Here is a pic I took of the last few hundred feet up the Half Dome cable route..

You get one of the best views in the world while wheezing your way up those cables. 50% or so of the people who make it to that point.. keep in mind they've hiked 8 miles and 5,000 feet up to get there.. chicken out.

Fun to just sit there and watch. people always shit their pants when they come up over the last ridge and get their first view of the cables.

that looks truly awesome. i've hiked all over the Canadian rockies, but almost always day hikes only. when i lived in Banff, i'd hike one of the many small mountains (.6 - 1km vertical) each day to keep in shape. once a month or so i'd do a full day hike on one of the heavier trails. definitely miss it.

no snowboarding and no hiking makes quiet a dull boy

a glock fail... hahah... I have been shooting guns a long time... and I have never seen a glock fail.. when it has the right ammo in there.... I have seen them droped from heli's ran over with tanks, put in the muddy river and cleaned the barrel with a fucing ragweed stem.. and never had a misfire nor a jam...

but for a .357 I would go with S&W's new design... there a nice gun and you get a 7 shot.. so can't beat that...

Get the Taurus, all the way.
If you want 357 Sig, GET A SIG!

I have a Taurus 454 Casull, makes the 357 look like a peashooter I use it for hunting dangerous animals (boar/bear/etc)

For other stuff, I have my HK USP45, never failed, tougher than anything else I've had.
Glocks are *nothing* compared to HK

Taurus has been around for 60 yrs or so, give or take... they started out by cc'ing American weapons out of Brazil. Unless they have done a total about face, there have always been small problems in them, but most people don't know weapons well enough to catch them. Buy a box of wildies and run it thru one and see how well they hold up. Personally I wouldn't use one for a back scratcher unless the sight was loose. They were considered for being banned as Saturday night specials in the late 70's, early 80's... thats why they went into stainless etc. Trying to buck up their image.

7 shots?? If you get past the 3rd or 4th with a charging bear you're lucky. Amazing how more rounds always seems to be brought up in weapons. More firepower is the dope dealers way of looking at things. If you don't put it down with the 2nd round, then odds are you're bear bait.

More firepower = better? How come you can empty a m16, 30 rd clip in to a tiger and they still don't always get the idea?

Full auto weapons are legal in ANY state as long as you can qualify for a FFL class 3. That is not a walk in the park to get and no doubt is a lot harder to get now. Nevada has no special status other than the shooting ranges rent them out. The only reason they rent them out, is there are more people there that will blow money over the idea that its worthwhile doing. The insurance it takes to do that has to be asteronomical. Federal Law governs full auto and other specialty weapons, that no state can abolish or modify to allow common ownership.

I just had the hubby type the above... I have no clue what alot of it means and he is the weapons expert. I never even saw a real gun until I was 17. He was brought up with them besides having alot of training and I trust his judgement.

If your dealing with bears, I would'nt go packing anything less than a .44 mag. A Rueger will never let you down.

One of the first overnighters I did in Yosemite was a 2 day trip to Matterhorn peak inspired by the Dharma Bums. Never hiked naked tho

Black bears are normally quite timid, just the noise will send them running. I've chased them out of campsites in Yosemite by banging pots and pans and chucking rocks more times than I care to remember. I don't expect to ever have to put a bullet into one, but if I did, a .357 with hard rounds should do it.

I wouldn't face a grizzly down with any sort of handgun. You hear about people taking them with .44 mags and .454 Casull's every so often, but you usually find they were on paid trips. You can afford to go the handgun route when you've got a master guide with a .300 winchester magnum backing you up.

A 12 gauge w/ rifled slugs is what the park service recommends if you're going to carry a weapon in grizzly country.
