Please help. I just fucked up.

Not like it is the end of the world or anything....BUT...I just deleted a 6.5GB file that I would really like to have kept. When the warning came up telling me it was too big for the recycle bin and asked if I was sure, I hit yes like a fucking idiot. Right about then I caught the file name and noticed my error.

Is there a way that I can recover this file?

(for the record...I already tried format c

dos variations used to have the undelete command, it might still work in xp. it will bring back the file with a funny name, but you can obviously tell which 6.5 gb file is which, i would think.

if that doesn't work, you can always send it out to a data recovery center, if you want to spend the $$

It is an untagged video I just edited. I have the full tagged version and I can take some time to re-edit it if I need to. Just looking for a simple fix.

I will check the suggestions above. Thanks.

are you on XP?

If so you can use the system restore program to roll your computer back to yesterday and recover your file.

start/ programs/ accessories/ system tools/ system restore

Open your DOS Window

Go to the drive the file was on

Ex's to try out:

C:\>undel filename.ext

C:\>undel filename.*

C:\>undel *.ext

C:\>undel *.*

One of them should find it. Use the above order to keep 'finds' down to a minimum. Each step should produce more and take more time, esp. the *.*

I miss the simplicity of DOS and the undelete command.. I remember one time though, my ex deleted the entire root directory (undelete with it), fortunately we were already online he had to beg for hours for someone to send him undelete.. they made him beg hard and laughed their asses off at him :P (I did too). HOpefully you can recover your file, Aaron

The only way to delete a file is delte it and fill the HArddrives with 0's basically rewriting every sector on the HArddisk. As you haven't done this you will be able to get the file back but it might be more work than just editing the video again. It all depends if you have written to that disk a lot after you deleted the file.

I take it you do not have a recovery program installed and/or GoBack?

Thanks idiot.

FYI...This was a brand new file that I was in the process of backing up.

People do make mistakes...Kinda like you suggestion that I am not a professional.

check this: http://www.programmersheaven.com/zone16/cat733/

I'd recommend Tiramisu, a friend of mine used it when his HDD crashed.

Try EasyRecovery Pro. It is very good, even on formatted disks

Norton System Works has a file recover thingy with it. Should work for you. I've seen it recover long lost file from way back.

Hope this helps

Fuck it. I could have re-edited the video by now.

The problem seems to be that the file did not go through the recycle bin...It was just deleted and most of these programs are not tracking that.

Thanks for yor suggestions.

I use Norton System Works but I doubt that it would do him any good to install it now, as the program would not have been tracking what was already done. Go Back is the easiest way to recover from a mistake such as the one AaronM committed, but then again you would have had to already have the program installed.
