The main reason liberals are annoyed by it is because the Republican party has spent a lot of time, effort, and money trying to brand themselves as an inclusive party and not just a party for rich white guys. Marco Rubio even famously looked around the stage during one of the GOP primary debates and pointed out that with two Hispanics, a black man, and a woman all running for president of their party that they, the Republicans, are the party of inclusion. Then they release a picture that looks like it was taken at a Duggar family reunion and it kind of looks bad.

Many liberals are hypocrites, but that doesn't change the fact that it is hard to say you are a party of inclusion when it is nothing but a sea of white faces.

you are correct that establishment republicans, in some spots, play to the left wing identity politics, & in the aftermath of romneys loss, self critiqued themselves has having to be more inclusive.

& yes, there are still a dearth of diversity in the GOP. a big reason, IMO, is that republicans dont like to pander to races or genders. they talk about everyman stuff, like jobs, security, things without an identity politics angle.

what is a GOP supposed to do, support affirmative action when they think its reverse discrimination? support reparations for slavery? even when they do little things, like you mentioned, the liberal media gives them no points for it.

& now trump has come in with an obviously anti-identity politics agenda. so its game over for the GOP pandering to minorites on liberals terms. Trump is going to attempt to appeal based on aspiration to the american dream. thats his angle.

so the issue of race is a big fat mess inside the GOP. short of simply telling minorities what they want to hear, like democrats, theres little the GOP can do to bring in people who put their race in front of their nationality.

Blacks are 12%, 90% of them are democrats. So that leaves roughly 1% of population that are black democrats. So naturally you can not see many or even any of them in groups of republicans. 1 or 2 in 100 would be natural number, no conspiracy.
Of course libbies would like affirmative action/token hirees etc, but normal people do what happens naturally, they do not force some people in just because "we need more people of color".
