Headphones. What's your poison ?

When I'm programming I like to listen to music, however at the office it just wouldn't work if all of us used speakers, so we use headphones.

Headphones are a very personal choice and it can take some time to get the right pair.

I'm a bit nuts about audio quality, so it took me a fair amount of time to find the right set of headphones that sounded great but could also stay comfortable for 24+ hour hack-a-thons.

Right now I'm sporting a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro closed studio headphones. Super comfortable and great dynamic range - plus a flat studio sound which provides an uncoloured music experience.

What do you use ?

Only time I use any kind of headphones is when I listen to audio books wile out walking. I have a simple pair not much better than the ones that came with my phone but slightly louder. They do the trick

sony mdr-cd780...the sound quality is mediocre, but they are comfortable enough to wear for hours and hours...big big plushy ear pads with soft inserts...I do not think they are in production any more either...they are soooooooft on the ears...

Depends. Which parameter? Number of sales? Quality? Higher price?
I'm pretty sure BEATS by Dre sales more headphones than any other but quality is horrible imo.
Seinheiser makes fantastic products.

you obviously have never tried using good quality headphones? it's like watching black and white tv your whole life, then getting a chance to watch good quality 4k tv one day... you will instantly say to yourself: "wtf? why didn't I switch sooner?!"... and besides it's not like decent headphones cost a lot, you can get decent ones for few hundred bucks... excellent ones for under $1k...

Bose Quiet Comfort 15's here

I bought these a few years ago. I was going to pickup some a Beats by Dr Dre set but the Bose just blew the Beats away. Amazing sound.

You are missing out. What you should do sometime is go to a store where you can try different headphones. Bring your favourite music with you on your mobile phone and start listening. You'll be really surprised.

I was reading a review of headphones in IT magazine and they said how seinheiser is best. Tho i think that test was more oriented to PC headphones then overall considering BO is more oriented to HIFI market. Atleast that what they said.

Anybody with common sense understands that you can not have one best as there are many parameters. Of course you might have one best but it would probably cost the most as well, like 50% more than second best and only 1% better etc. These are very subjective parameters, not like an actual calculation of what is best.
Besides - why would that reviewer be world's authority on saying what is the best?

I never heard of this brand before.
So I headed on over to Amazon and placed a order for the Audio Technica ATH-CKP200 RD.

I had the Sennheiser adidas PMX 685i in my wish list for a few weeks since they been discontinued by Manufacturer for what ever reason I don't know, was hesitating on the purchase.

The Technica are cheaper by $10.00 or so, But they look better and more durable for working out with.

Thank you for for putting that name brand out there..

I wanted to inquire about this as well - what are good ones that are not too big to wear on the move, I mean for those who do not like to walk around in massive headphones. Not talking about in ear, just talking about some that would not be too huge.
Of course it may be that they must be big/bigger in order to achieve quality and if you want smaller you have to accept lower quality.

Physics.

Full sized headphones have better dynamic range because of the isolation of the drivers from anything else around them. Bass sounds better because of the space around the drivers just like a large set of speakers is able to resonate well at lower frequencies.

High quality headphones, like my Beyer Dynamics, are large but so comfortable you hardly notice them. They are far more comfortable than ear buds.

In top end headphones you can have closed or open designs. Closed designs are better at excluding outside noise, very good for in studio use. Open designs give a little edge on clarity, however outside noise will pollute the sound.

I have been a Sennheisser user for nearly 30 years. My last pair were accidentally "recycled" by my wife, forcing me to buy another pair. They lasted me nearly 10 years. The ear cups only had the foam left, all of the material had worn off, but they still sounded fantastic.

I purchased a pair of Sennheiser HD 700's. They're pricey. But they're also the only make of Over-the-Ear headphones I find truly comfortable. Plus, I'm a believer in you get what you pay for. I'll no doubt have these for the next 10 years and so, at $150/yr depreciation, I figure is not bad.

Sennheiser HD 700 - Audiophile Headphones - High Sound Quality - Around Ear

I don't like earbuds, nor do I like ON EAR headphones. I like over ear cups as I find them infinitely more comfortable.

The downside to these is it makes the flaws associated with mp3 files/Apple's files very apparent. Certainly it makes you appreciate paying for FLAC tracks and ripping your own music collection to FLAC.

Then again, I'm one of those guys that prefers the sound of vinyl over CD, let alone the crap that is mp3.

ETA: no matter what headphones you use, however, if the source material is crappy/low quality, and the amplifier pushing them is low quality/under powered, then the result will be less than optimal as well.
