Whats a good all round printer for infrequent use?

I've used a Kodak 5210 all-in-one for the last 6 years or so, for very light usage. I print the odd page from the computer, the occasional 6X4 photo of the grandkids and also the odd 'photocopy' of whatever I put under the glass....

However its developed a fault where it doesn't recognise the printhead. Well, it recognises it when you tell it to calibrate it, and when you want a test page - But for all other normal uses, it complains that the printhead isn't installed. But thats beside the point.

I'm NOT getting another kodak (if they still even make them) so what make should I go for? What make of simple printer will do my normal tasks, and not be overkill for usage of perhaps once or twice a month?

Cost NOT an issue but longevity a must

Thanks in advance

Canon.

Other printers I've had, the printhead would dry up with infrequent use, or they would tell you they've run out of ink and refuse to print when there was plenty of ink left. Canons don't do this, they keep printing until a blank page comes out, it's up to you to decide when to put a new ink cartridge in.

Most printers have a short design cycle, so apart from overall brand reputation there's probably no easy way to determine how long a specific model is likely to last...

FWIW, my Canon i865 lasted for 10+ years before it gave up. It was well obsolete by then.

Thanks all so far. Since my post Kodak have contacted me and offered me a replacement printhead for free. It should be here within 4 days so I may not need a new printer - YET...

But If it doesn't work, a Canon will be the first brand I look at

I gave up with printers, I only print 3 -4 things a month, so just stick it on a pendrive and print it at the local shop. They only charge 4 pence for bw and 60p for colour, it's cheaper than buying the ink.

I just got a samsung colour laser for $200 Canadian so probably about 90p for you?

Laser might be better as the toner doesn't dry up like ink does.

I have taken to making the lists I need all digital -- readable on my smartphone.

Occasional prints? Photocopies? It is probably more cost efficient to use a quick print place copier or printer. Especially for the occasional photo print -- you can buy a lot better quality than an ink-jet printer or a color laser would offer.

Digitize and save a tree

I have an HP POS 3-in-1/[Fax (that I never used)] that I hate and the ink cartridges are a fortune. I will just get a low cost B&W laser next time.

I carry a tablet with documents as .txt or as a pdf to show people -- you can always email it or write it to a USB OTG or micro USB drive

Having just spent nearly as much as what my printer cost me for new ink cartridges, I will never ever ever buy ink again or another printer. From here on out, the local printer will be used as it is far far cheaper in the long run. Fuck Canon!

I use a 15 year old HP laser for papers and documents I really need to print out to sign or read.

Anything color related, gets emailed and printed at a local print office. I print so infrequently so there is no way I could afford the space for another device let alone the cost and the upkeep of those printer cartridges.

Well Kodak only said they would send me a new printhead yesterday morning, and fuck me silly, low and behold, its arrived already!

I've installed it and printer is functioning perfectly again ! Cool...

Its great news actually as I have a stash of ink I bought in bulk a while back, so it would have been a shame to have wasted it
