Google Hacks Book

<A HREF="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0596004478/fuckernet-20">
Google Hacks</A>

The O'reilly Hacks format of "here is the code, and here's what you need to do to quickly modify it" is quite useful.

Some people might remember me mentioning being on Slashdot a few weeks ago. That was in part because of a Google API hack I wrote.

Even though I already know a lot of the API hacks listed in the book well, and most of the advice is already familiar, it's that 10% I didn't know about, or didn't think about the same way, that makes all the difference. Great collection of resources- snag it.

... I bet they wonīt show you the real killer tricks ... like:

wanna know a true google backdoor ??

do the following:

1.) register a brandnew domain
2.) search for your favourite keyword at google
3.) check out the namserversettings of the top listing
4.) point your brandnew domain to those namservers
5.) chose an existing domain and link from this domain to your brandnew domain like http://www.brandnedomain.com/keyword.html
6.) wait 4 weeks ... and redirect !!

... and as always, of course I would never ever do this myself !!!

I saw you post this in that other thread. Neat trick, thanks for sharing it (I think).

I found 3 API hacks in the book that can be exploited. The book also explains how to do a few things that contradict google's terms of service.

Wow, wow, wait. Does that actually work? How the heck would it? I really don't see how that'd work. There's no logic behind it at all.

Cheers,
Matt

whenever people see the word "hack" , they jump into it.. it doesnt have to do with cheating, beating the system, or shit like that.

hacking is a term, which has lost its original meaning.. but senior programming experts still try to use it with that right meaning.

I agree

Back when i was a toddler, i learned that a hacker is not criminal, nor trying to find "backdoors" all day long, or writing AOL spam proggi's ...

A true hacker is a mindstate, no tasks or accomplishments are necesary.

A true hacker is against companies like microsniff profitting off a now manopolized market.

A true hacker is against telephone companies charging you $0.10 per minute when it costs them little to nothing for to maintain the call.

A true hacker NEVER calls himself or anyone else a hacker, and never brags about accomplishments.

A true hacker knows atleast 3 "phreakers" that have still to this day have access to atleast one beige box, and has memories of sitting in a parkinglot in middle of the night hooked into the local deli phone line, heh

A true hacker would UNBAN AaronM!!!!!!!!!

My buddy has a device in his car that picks up wireless frequencies with a dish, and he can get into wireless networks all over the place... good times.

He told me that it's amazing how many companies don't change their wireless ID and have no security whatsoever.

Go figure.

You said this before and it still doesn't make any sense. Your domain will be dead if you just point it to someone else's domain name server. The, when Google follows a link from an existing page to your new domain, all it will get is an error resolving the domain. Are you telling me that Google gives high ranks to sites it can't even contact? How will it know where to rank you if there isn't even a page for it to read. What about the fact that tens of thousands of domains in Google must share nameservers. Do they automatically get the same rankings as other domains on their servers?

Also, this book doesn't seem to be about that sort of thing. It's just about getting the most out of Google searches. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with improving your rank in Google.

Yeah... thats what I was thinking. Sounds like a pretty bunk idea to me. Like it was cut & pasted from somewhere without being tried or tested for logic first.

I've always had the impression that Funkmaster knew a think or two about a thing or two.

I suppose you could put like

1. NS1.YAHOO.COM
2. NS2.YAHOO.COM
3. NS3.your-real-nameserver.com

And when it fails to resolve at the other two, it will go to your backup. But like someone said, it would be pretty dumb of google to give any sort of credit for what nameservers your using.

Yes, I suppose you could set a third or fourth server to the appropriate DNS. It still doesn't really make sense that your nameserver settings would effect your rank, though. If you find anything out, let me know

You've misunderstood the point of the book. The book is about ways to use Google, and about Google API development, and it's full of interesting applications and ideas. It's also an excellent reference handbook. It was written by two well known, respected, ecclectic, knowledgable individuals, and is not some Jolly Roger / 2600 type shit.

(tangent: nobody's blocking the evolution of human creativity in the realm of software application, unless it's a legal system based on a precedental legacy of outmoded property analogies. I don't want to delve into an argument about the word hack.)

Information access is never either/or. Be aware of everything,
and keep your best utilities close at hand, whether they're books, newsletters, boards, source code, tools, websites, blogs, people, or your own ideas.

For Google API stuff, I'd read the book before using the board. I'm one of the few people who answers questions there.
The book is authoritative and succinct. The board is handy if you you've hit a frustration node and want to find someone else who got past yours in particular. many questions still go unanswered.

For general Google optimization stuff, webmaster world is indispensible. the book is a complete reference for a lot of the salient information that's there (and covers some things that aren't there).
