I've always wondered...why only 6 states?

From looking at this corona bottle on the back it says...

MA - CT - ME - VT - DE - NY

Massachusetts - Connecticut - Maine - Vermont - Deleware - New York

5cent Refund!

Why not anywhere else?

I know you already have a collection of bottles from digging in the garbage can to pay for your cardboard box rent, but to be honest, I don't know the answer to that.

i'm pretty sure it's either WA or OR that does as well... they have little automated booths you can go up to and drop stuff in.

I need to ship some coke cans to the states that pay 5 cent deposits on. They are all over the place here being that it's only 30 cents a pound or so when you recycle them.

In GA, you have to actually pay extra to get your trash recycled. I think I was paying $4 a month or something when I live in Marietta. Here in the hills, we just cart it all the dump

I had a scrap metal company look at my software a few years ago, down in Los Angles, he ask me a ton of questions about making some changes. By the time I drove back to the Bay Area and had time to thing about it, I told the programmer I really don't think we want to do business with these people. About 3 months later I read about the Company in the paper. State of California fined him a millon $$ he was inporting cans from states that didn't have deposits and recycling laws.

My bottle of Corona has "CA REDEMPTION VALUE, OR 5 cents, IA 5 cents, MI 10 cents" screen-printed with the rest of the label. My coke bottle has "MI 10 cents NY 5 cents" stamped on it along with the date and lot number. I'd guess the bottlers list only the states in which they might sell the bottle...this Corona says "imprted by Barton Beers, Chicago Illinois"...probably there are a handful of other regional importers in the country, and each lists only the states covered in their territories. (Though it's odd that the four states they list are CA and OR on the west coast, and IA and MI in the midwest).

I was born and lived way down south Kentucky. Everyone used to recycle their coke bottles and shit to get extra spending money. Lots of people made it their full time job.

In the US, only 11 states have deposit-refund legislation. The states with deposits recycle more bottles and cans than all the other 39 states combined.

Purpose: Litter reduction and recycling - this regulation is intended to provide a mechanism for economically and environmentally sound collection of empty beverage containers, to foster systems of redemption which facilitate recycling and reuse of empty beverage containers, and to minimize costs without inconveniencing consumers.
