Klein SD parents,

Current news in the arena of world events indicates we should all take measures for safety and securtiy in increasing measure. Uthe United States Department of Homeland Security has raised the level of alert. We think it important that you know Klein Independent School District continues to coordinate efforts with governmental agencies locally, and at state and national levels.

Klein District has an emergency plan in place, which provides for response to anticipated crises and security needs. Information and training continues to be a focus should the need arise for response. One emergency plan involves an arragement called "Shelter in Place" in which students and school personnel might need to remain at school beyond the regular school day. In an extreme crisis situation, judged by school district personnel and/or governmental officials, access to the schools by parents or guardians may be limited. The district is keeping addtional supplies should a "Shelter in Place" situation become a reality at our schools. Although this crisis is not anticipated, we are requesting that you discuss with your child the possibility of such a major change in family routines.

Although unpleasant to think about, parents need to resist the instinct to pick up students from school if it becomes necessary that students stay in place when access is prohibited. Instead, parents should immediately try to learn by radio, television, telephone or other communication devicees such as our KleINTOUCH e-mail service the status of students in a "Shelter in Place" situation. If you are not a current subscriber, you may do so by going directly to the district website at www.kleinisd.net. Every teacher currently has a classroom phone. Knowing the the telephone number of your child's teacher may be important in an emergency. The most important issue for families to understand is that flexibility in responding to the unknown is wise planning. Consider more routine family conversations in response to veariety of circumstances.

Even though these type issues are difficult to talk about with your child, it is important for you to consider:

What does your child already know and understand about the situation at hand?

Does your child understand being away from home under and emergency situation is permissible in certain situations such as the "Shelter in Place" concept?

Does your child understand about emergency procedures that may need to take place at your home, at school or other place of shelter as a result of unplanned events?

It is with your assistance that our children will be adequately prepared for the unexpected at home or away from home. Following are some web sites to assist you in talking with your children about our current events:

ACLU Blasts New Jersey Terrorcrat
NEWARK - The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey today severely criticized a high-level state official for saying that in the event of a "red alert" security level, "You literally are staying at home...What we're saying is, 'Everybody sit down.' If you are left standing, you are probably a terrorist."

"What that statement describes is essentially martial law," said Deborah Jacobs, Executive Director of the ACLU of New Jersey.
RED ALERT MEANS YOU WILL BE A PRISONER IN YOUR HOME AND THE SCHOOLS WILL KEEP YOU FROM YOUR CHILDREN, TAKING THEM TO "SECRET LOCATIONS"
Do you really believe that terrorists will carry out a strike and then have the resources to attack the secret location where the children will be? That's ridiculous. This is about the State setting a precedent that they can order you to stay in your home, or that you will be considered an enemy (the definition of extreme martial law) and that your children are their property.

A "lockdown" of the Gardner-Dickinson Free School Thursday and Friday was not timed to coincide with the bombing campaign in Iraq - rather, it was just an odd coincidence, according to acting Principal Cathie Allain.
State, city outline plans in case red alert called
In the event of a red alert, people could be ordered to curtail their movements. Businesses could be told to close. Public events such as baseball games or the Panoply arts festival could be canceled.
SC: National Guard Troops Would Patrol
National Guard troops would begin patrolling specific facilities, including protecting the entrances to state and federal office buildings and courthouses.

FLASHBACK: You Heard Them Right, the National Guard Is Considering Shooting Old Ladies

"Would a National Guardsman," he asked, "shoot a grandmother trying to evade quarantine?"

"Maybe", Gostin said. "You have to use all reasonable force. Sometimes", he added, "that could mean lethal force."

I'd consider that kidnapping, no different the a car-jacking with my kid in the back.. jack my car with my kid in the back and you aint getting more then 25 feet without a bullet in the back of your head.

And they're gonna pull that in texas where 95% of the population wouldn't be able to deal with it as nice as I would... good fucking luck... those teachers would be safer with the fucking terrorists.

This comes as a surprise to you?
People who send their children to public schools need to realize that the gov't *already* considers your children to be their property.

So when terror alerts are high, keep all the kids in one place.

Sounds like a winner for sure.

I don't usually play devils advocate, but I would like to see if I could provide a different perspective on this.

My girls both attend public school (this is their first year). I received a letter from their school as well. It's similar to the letter sent out in Texas, although maybe with a little less depth. I had the same reaction as most of you when I read it. "My girls are my everything.....and I'd be damned if anyone thought they could keep me away from them." I thought of how scared they would be without me .... and then I thought of the harm I could potentially cause them if I did remove them from the school. See the reason they lock down the schools is because most of them have a way of sealing the air and recirculating it, so that in the event of a nuclear war, they could at least sustain life a little longer than we could at home. I don't like the idea of my children being without me in a crisis......but if it came down to it, I'd just as soon sit outside their classroom window (pending I could make it that far) and reassure them that way, rather than break the air seal and expose them to whatever it is I was exposed to.

I don't like the idea of anyone controlling me or my kids.......but I do recognize when someone else can provide better safety measures for them than I can. It's kind of like if you neighbor had a bomb shelter, and had room for your kids....but not you. Wouldn't you want your kids to survive what you might not??

Just a different perspective. But who know, I've served in the military....could be I'm one of them brainwashed Americans everyone keeps talking about.

And why would you think a teacher , who has probably 25-30 kids to look after, would do a better job than you, in an absolute panic situation??

I'm not suggesting the teacher could take better care of my child, I am suggesting though that in the event of a nuclear situation, a School that can seal off the outside air and circulate it's own effectively for several weeks, is more apt to be the better situation for my or any child......vs. exposing them to the elements.

while this may be true in some sense, i think if things had reached a point that horrendous in any certain locale, being entombed in a school for a few weeks isn't going to help. if my kids have to die for someones political agenda, i'd prefer they did it in the company of their parents and loved ones, not some teachers that they despise... the whole supposition is bizarre really, and seems more geared towards spreading fear than anything else IMO..

The kids don't even have to know anything is going on in school while they are secured inside. Personally I would rather have my kids safe and secure without me, than in danger with me.

This is unbelievable. Schools have already proven they can't protect children when there is no crisis...why on Earth during a condition red alert should we believe that these people can protect our kids? Not to mention, they probably have kids of their own.

It is just the arrogance of the educational system...believe me, in Texas or anywhere else, just try to stop parents from picking up their kids.

It appears it's going to be standard policy everywhere fairly soon.

I just received pretty much the same information verbatim today from our local school district.

I agree.

1. If the situation was that the kids couldn't come outside because of whatever hit there a few days, weeks, or months in a school isn't going to save them. Rather them be with family.
2. You are probably correct in that it is something done to put fear in people.
3. I'll be a dead fucker the day my kid can be locked down and I can't get him. So will whoever tries to stop me from seeing them. If I see anything like this from our local schools there is 0 chance that my son is going there.

My 2 cents

I live in Frederick MD. On 9/11 when we watched the news about the WTC I went to my kids school asap and picked her up.

Ft. Detrick is a central target for every terrorist out there, period.

However we are somewhat equipped at home for an emergency and it does make sorta sense that they want to keep your kids in a safe place. I still would want my kid home.

When I picked up my daughter about 5 minutes into the WTC bombing, most teachers or students didn't even know what happend.

I live less than 5 miles from FT. Detrick and if it hits there we're kaboom within 300 miles anyway. So yea I rather have my children with me (plus we do have necessary stuff for this kind of attack at home) and I doubt the school has a gasmask for each child attending.
