More info on the FBI vs Apple for the unlocked backdoor

According to Apple, the password for the phone in question, was changed within 24/hrs of the FBI taking the phone into their possession. Meaning either the FBI is just trying to use this very public case to make an argument to force Apple to comply or they fucked up and locked the phone after having access to it.

Apple implies FBI screwup: iPhone Apple ID password changed in govt possession, backdoor unnecessary | 9to5Mac

pretty shady shit, they are doing. Added to this, Apple has offered 4 different ways to get them access to the data with out building a back door.

I don't really like Apple, but I give them props for standing their ground.

I really don't understand why (cough! cough!) the government and the FBI do not just ask Apple to unlock the one iPhone that is the subject of the search warrant. From the tone of Mr. Cook's letter to the FBI it seems this may be possible with one phone, under these circumstances, with a search warrant and a Court order limited just that one phone.

I disagree with this Judge and Apple is not hurting for the legal fees to appeal this Court's order. So, if there was any exigency; the Court has delayed discovery of any other plotters or conspirators by agreeing with the FBI and government's stubborn foolishness and the lack of regard for the computer user's security. Apple may take this issue to the Supreme Court and it may take 2 years to get resolved.

What an unneccesary cluster-fuck this has become

Had this whole matter been approached with some common sense;
  1. There would be no drama
  2. There would be no breach of security for law abiding citizens

If it was an Android phone in question would Google just roll over or dig their heels in and object also?

I think the govt isn't too worried about this one phone.. They are using it as a way to get backdoor access. I'm sure they just assumed they could pressure Apple into complying.

Why do I get the feeling this is all for show? Theater. Propaganda. Post Snowden leaks.

The government needs to push the narrative that they can't crack encryption.. Make criminals and terrorists feel safe using encrypted services and devices.

Apple is the new Microsoft?

if the terrorist used wickr or coverme or any of the other encryption messaging programs it probably won't matter anyway, just show them locations etc......wickr is super secure and shreds everything on a timetable you dictate. They could get their contact list I guess, if that is what they want.

iPhone User Donald Trump Wants to Boycott Apple

Quote:
GOP presidential candidate and sack of rotting tangerines Donald Trump has called for a boycott of Apple products until the tech company obeys the government’s demands about unlocking a suspect’s phone.

“Boycott Apple,” the pumpkin-themed businessman said at a rally in South Carolina.

I'm all for Apple cracking the phone on their turf and then destroying it due to nature of the case. Not a fan of them building a new firmware version etc... and then handing that over to them so they can crack any phone whenever they wan't.

I don't think the FBI has any far reaching nefarious purpose for this "backdoor" from Apple. They most likely only want to get into this phone.

The problem is, once they get this new power, it could easily "slip" out of their grasp and end up with the wrong people. The FBI is comprised of human beings, and we know how that goes. So the end result will be our worst fear come to life, whether the FBI is being shady or not. It will happen.

It's the same reason you don't tell anyone your passwords for ANYTHING -- even close friends or family. It's just following good nerd security practices.
