Question: Upgrading Ram in an iMac...

Currently got the two top slots with a 2 GB chip in each - 4GB... I've got two more 4GB chips arriving to put in the two remaining slots and I'll then have a total of 12GB

Late 2009 iMac supports up to 16GB... Question is as follows...

Do I just put the new ram in the empty slots, or do I need to put the 2 2GBs on one side and the 2 4GBs on the other?

Cheers

I don't think order matters but not sure. I also have the late 2009 imac. I used old ram from my wife's macbook, just stuck it in, rebooted and worked fine.

Do the ram chips not need to be the same? I thought you needed to either have all 2gb or upgrade to the 4gb.

You may need to remove the 2gb's and put in the 4gb's for now, giving you 8, then get either another 1 or 2 4gbs.

This is what happened with our laptop. Maybe different with a mac, but I think not

Well I've just done the dirty deed... It doesn't matter what slots you use... Simple as anything..

The thing about me thinking they needed to be the same is a throwback to my old windows days... These days, things 'Just Work'...
