And because of this accident if convicted the guy will spend up to three years locked in prison, might lose his appartment/house since he'll be in prison, unable to pay rent/mortage, and when he comes out he'll have a prison record which will reduce his employment and housing opportunities, and be on parole which if he violates, by getting into another fight for example, will send him back to prison.

This is why taking justice into your own hands only works in westerns, rarely does it work in the real world.

A couple of drunk animals came to a free clinic and attacked a nurse (ok, one of them did it physically). Another man (a doctor, a rocket scientist or whoever because his profession doesn't matter) has reacted on that and punched the harassers with bare hands (he has no weapon and/or intention to kill). One of those mofos has died accidentally. Now that man will go to jail for an unmeditated murder. What a big deal...
