First step - reboot, and no I'm not kidding.
Is the folder still SHARED? If you did'nt make any changes, start from the beginning and go through all the steps you went through to get it shared in the first place. You can never reboot windows enough.

Can also try to just refresh the window once you're in my network places. right click and click refresh. sometimes that helps.

Though I don't use windowsXP and I'm not sure how the home networking differs on it. I had also expirenced wierd anonmolies with not being able to see the other persons computer at times.
I assume the workgroup name is the same? Are you using a hub or a crossover cable? I know this probly sound useless but it might help. Try rebooting one machine before the other and vice versa

Welp, im out of basic Ideas. Usually with windows its something really stupid you've overlooked and will kick yourself when you find it.
Have you installed any new hardware or software that might change your settings or anything? Find out whats NOT causing it and you'll eventually find the problem.

When in doubt, use the XP wizard.

Make sure you have NWlink NetBios installed as services on both ( in the network properties).

I did a quick search on google for:
Cant see other computer on home network in windowxp, and this is a snippet of what I found. Re: cant see other computer I also had the same problem with a 2 nic desktop I had where one card connected to a cable modem and the other to a hub. I was able to see the resourses of each when I left-clicked the nic to the hub and brought up properties. Then I selected TCP/IP and the properties button. I selected the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and on the next tab, (Alternate Configuration) I typed the IP address and the Subnet Mask. OK, OK and it work after that although I don't know why.
