I read that Google runs on 12,000 servers.

I wonder how many techs it takes to maintain that. Sweet Jebus thats a lot of servers!

If they are configured right and the servers are good quality they don't need many techs. It's a giant web cluster so if they think they need more speed they just add more.

Going by the substance of most of those posts, I'd reckon no more than a two-hole outhouse is needed...

They started in GlobalCenter near my racks. About 20 computer boards stacked with 1/2 of them upside-down to save rack space. Slot1 Pentium 2 CPUs were the fashion.

Rarely if ever was a tech there unless he was adding more servers.

The Shop-Ko style datacenter was no match for the heat generated by 200 then 800 servers. Fans and wind tubes were brought in but it seems they really needed to build an exhaust vent.

And they all run a (tweaked) version of FreeBSD. There are plenty of articles about how Google does it. If you consider that this is probably spread across four or more datacenters, and that the machines are all 1u 2ide drive setups, it starts making sense.

I think growing out sideways is the way to go. Lots of small replaceable machines.
