And they all run a (tweaked) version of FreeBSD. There are plenty of articles about how Google does it. If you consider that this is probably spread across four or more datacenters, and that the machines are all 1u 2ide drive setups, it starts making sense.
I think growing out sideways is the way to go. Lots of small replaceable machines.
