British food - what should I try in one day?

Visiting Uk for one day. Would like to taste some traditional food

So far I tried fish and chips (not lived up to the hype, basically just dry fish + potatoes) and English breakfast (impressed because it is pretty unique breakfast compared to European or worldwide countries).

What should be next? I hear some thing called PIE?
Something else?

Cheers

Wow, Eels are actually delicacy (as said in the video about Netherlands) and expensive in many European countries.

Whatever you decide to eat, make sure you brush your teeth after you're done. It's something many a UK citizen appear to forget.

I hate English food, and I grew up there. One thing I still occasionally buy is cod roe--fish eggs--and you can get roe in most fish and chips shops. Steak and kidney pie isn't too bad either. English candy is good--the chocolate is made in a different process to Hershey's and actually tastes better.

The reason you can't get English food anywhere else in the world is because everyone else knows better.

Where do locals eat it? Are there "pie restaurants" or is it more like a pub food?

I just did quick research - that pie looks huge for one person, could I eat it alone? Or do they serve in smaller portions as well?

Mutton, Rabbit. I had nice venison steak one night.

I ordered a salad and it looked like a bunch of weeds -- I cannot recommend it.

At a Pie & Mash shop. eg. Goddards at Greenwich | Traditional pie mash and liquor restaurant in Greenwich London

Pie, Mash and Liquor:
Pie is a savoury pie with meat in (not fruit)
Mash is mashed potato
Liquor is parsley sauce - not something alcoholic

you can get it in pubs and in take out places. Some of the take outs its a hand held pie like a calzone just with different insides

Found couple "pie and mash shops" nearby my visiting spot.
However they do not serve steak and kidney pie, just "pie, mash and liquor".

Is it because setak and kidney pie is too posh for regular pie and mash joints?

Proper roast beef in a big yorkshire pudding with lashings of gravy.
Traditional lancashire hotpot is a real favourite though. Simple hearty food, but I defy anyone not to enjoy that!

When we spent a week in Ireland we started off with the local cuisine, the next day we went to Italian. Definitely better than what we get in the states ... and have you ever seen an English or Irish restaurant? There is a reason.

Hell, we have Ethiopian restaurants here while they starve in Ethiopia.

Pretty sure the British built the largest empire ever just cause their food was so bad that they wanted to claim others

I read that chicken tikka massala was the most popular dish in UK

Ps: what is the difference between chicken curry and chicken tikka massala?
It seems like just a different sauce - curry vs massala?

Normally there will be a large selection to choose from all under the description of "pie, mash and liquor".
Beef / Beef and vegetables / some vegetarian muck / cheese and onion / chicken and mushroom / steak and kidney / steak and ale / fish / something spicy with far too much chilli in.

Steak and kidney is ordinary enough most fish and chip shops would do it too.

There is no traditional British food I would ever recommend you to try. You better go to France, Spain, Italy, Russia/Ukraine/Belorussia or to some Scandinavian European country. You'll find a lot of good food there (not even mention the South America and Asia where is a real heaven for those who want to eat something real unusual and delicious). The UK is not the right place for a gastronomic traveler. Their food is tasteless and boring like an oatmeal

Only people who believe entirely in stereotypes think that all traditional British food is bad. The truth is most people can't make it properly so it comes out like shit. Just like I'm sure that this doesn't represent all Russian food
