British food - what should I try in one day?

Visiting Uk for one day. Would like to taste some traditional food :thumbsup

So far I tried fish and chips (not lived up to the hype, basically just dry fish + potatoes) and English breakfast (impressed because it is pretty unique breakfast compared to European or worldwide countries).

What should be next? I hear some thing called PIE? :)
Something else?

Cheers :winkwink:

Wow, Eels are actually delicacy (as said in the video about Netherlands) and expensive in many European countries.

Forest 07-12-2015 08:29 AM

steak and kidney pie!

Harmon 07-12-2015 08:31 AM

Whatever you decide to eat, make sure you brush your teeth after you're done. It's something many a UK citizen appear to forget.

L-Pink 07-12-2015 08:31 AM

Find a good Italian restaurant.

Steak does not sound exclusively British, I can eat it anywhere.
Kidney pie on the other hand - looking into it :thumbsup

EDIT: just realized it was one dish! :1orglaugh
Will try it !

"Pie" in my mind is/was a desert and sweat thing, like apple pie or whatever. But in UK they have a different meaning for it :)

I see what you did there :1orglaugh

I am sticking with foods that you can not eat anywhere in the world, though :pimp

I hate English food, and I grew up there. One thing I still occasionally buy is cod roe--fish eggs--and you can get roe in most fish and chips shops. Steak and kidney pie isn't too bad either. English candy is good--the chocolate is made in a different process to Hershey's and actually tastes better.

The reason you can't get English food anywhere else in the world is because everyone else knows better. :winkwink:

Where do locals eat it? Are there "pie restaurants" or is it more like a pub food?

I just did quick research - that pie looks huge for one person, could I eat it alone? :1orglaugh Or do they serve in smaller portions as well? :winkwink:

Barry-xlovecam 07-12-2015 09:05 AM

Mutton, Rabbit. I had nice venison steak one night.

I ordered a salad and it looked like a bunch of weeds -- I cannot recommend it.

CurrentlySober 07-12-2015 09:06 AM

At a Pie & Mash shop. eg. Goddards at Greenwich | Traditional pie mash and liquor restaurant in Greenwich London

Pie, Mash and Liquor:
Pie is a savoury pie with meat in (not fruit)
Mash is mashed potato
Liquor is parsley sauce - not something alcoholic

brassmonkey 07-12-2015 10:12 AM

rat poison ale

Yes it is one dish and there are a lot of places that sever it. Very good and very British

The Porn Nerd 07-12-2015 10:23 AM

Found couple "pie and mash shops" nearby my visiting spot.
However they do not serve steak and kidney pie, just "pie, mash and liquor".

Is it because setak and kidney pie is too posh for regular pie and mash joints?

xFoundry 07-12-2015 12:57 PM

Different variations of English breakfast, is the best choice!

rastan 07-12-2015 01:12 PM

Proper roast beef in a big yorkshire pudding with lashings of gravy.
Traditional lancashire hotpot is a real favourite though. Simple hearty food, but I defy anyone not to enjoy that!

F-U-Jimmy 07-12-2015 07:49 PM

Have a nice Indian Curry, most of India lives in the UK so it's not hard to find a good one

Mr Pheer 07-12-2015 09:59 PM

I'm surprised nobody has suggested Beef Wellington, which is actually quite good.

baddog 07-12-2015 11:02 PM

For some reason I always thought you were British. Where is home?

When we spent a week in Ireland we started off with the local cuisine, the next day we went to Italian. Definitely better than what we get in the states ... and have you ever seen an English or Irish restaurant? There is a reason.

Hell, we have Ethiopian restaurants here while they starve in Ethiopia.

julio2579 07-12-2015 11:21 PM

I dont know if they only make this for christmas but.... "british fruit cake"

Pretty sure the British built the largest empire ever just cause their food was so bad that they wanted to claim others

scarlettcontent 07-13-2015 02:04 AM

here are a few to try
pork pies
scotch eggs
toad in the hole
steak & kidney pie

VikingMan 07-13-2015 02:14 AM

I always see KFC everywhere around London. LOL

I read that chicken tikka massala was the most popular dish in UK :winkwink:

Ps: what is the difference between chicken curry and chicken tikka massala?
It seems like just a different sauce - curry vs massala? :upsidedow

Normally there will be a large selection to choose from all under the description of "pie, mash and liquor".
Beef / Beef and vegetables / some vegetarian muck / cheese and onion / chicken and mushroom / steak and kidney / steak and ale / fish / something spicy with far too much chilli in.

Steak and kidney is ordinary enough most fish and chip shops would do it too.

There is no traditional British food I would ever recommend you to try. You better go to France, Spain, Italy, Russia/Ukraine/Belorussia or to some Scandinavian European country. You'll find a lot of good food there (not even mention the South America and Asia where is a real heaven for those who want to eat something real unusual and delicious). The UK is not the right place for a gastronomic traveler. Their food is tasteless and boring like an oatmeal :2 cents:

spads 07-13-2015 03:31 AM

Only people who believe entirely in stereotypes think that all traditional British food is bad. The truth is most people can't make it properly so it comes out like shit. Just like I'm sure that this doesn't represent all Russian food :)

Pie, Chips and Gravy

EddyTheDog 07-13-2015 04:37 AM

Find a good 'gastro' pub, search Google...

Game pie is as traditional as it gets, followed by spotted dick and custard for dessert.....
