| Idiots. Top scientists have said that this is a bad idea, and you don't have to be top scientist to see that this is fucking bad idea. We can get back to this when we have that intergalaxy expedition force and death ray capable of destroying planets. |

 | It won't happen. Course if your name is not Connor MacLeod. The radio signal have to reach another civilization, to be recognized there and replied. The most closest star to our Solar system is Proxima Centauri, which is located in about 4.2 light years away. This means if there was a planet with aliens that also listening the space for radio signals, it would take 8+ years to make a contact. Unfortunately there are no planets in Goldilocks Zone. The nearest unconfirmed planet (Gliese 581 d) where theoretically can be some forms of life is in 20.3 light years away from Earth. The radio signal was sent to Gliese 581 d in 2009 (find more about it here: Hello from Earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

 | Radio signals are not going to contact anyone. They degrade and are subjected to so much interference that they do not go as far as we think. I would need to look it up to see how far it goes. |

 | You are wrong. Radio telescopes receives signals from other other galaxies. That means those signals do not degrade within 1000's of light years.

So, it is possible to focus and amplify a signal which is what i guess these guys will try. However, no one will be watching I love Lucy on other planets.

 | Damn Star Trek nerds When I read crap like this and I really wish the jocks would come back to bitch slap the nerds. It's a complete waste of time and money doing garbage like this. Especially when there's mountains of undiscovered life right here in our oceans.

 | Voyager does it. But its signal is aimed straight to Earth. Also it's the (signal) not powerful enough to reach the nearest Galaxy. Thus there is a much bigger chance that aliens will intercept our TV shows from 20s century.

 | So what they want to send out a signal to other planets? Didn't they already do this in the 80s? I mean why would you just listen and not send out a signal? Anyway, I think it's highly unlikely anything would ever hear a call. The distances are just too vast and the probability too small. |

 | You have to love the Dr Shostak idea re: what message to send "My personal preference is to send the internet - send it all because if you send a lot of information then there's some chance that they'll work it out" So they'll work out that 90% of the planet are dribbling buffoons ?

You are underestimating people back then. And think about this; if we were some aliens going to build something, would it be some "pile of rocks"? Not using any modern techniques or materials?

 | If the aliens are so advanced and intend to harm us, we don't need to worry about sending a signal. They will find us with or without the signal :P

In either way, I wouldn't want to help them. And if they are so fucking advanced and looking for other life, we don't need to send signal either. So why send anything if it is either pointless or potentially dangerous?

 | Who's to say that alien civilizations (if they exist) haven't developed technology to scan further using different technologies. We, as mere humans, already theorize time travel and warp... why can't a super-advanced or lucky civilization already have discovered how to put these into practice and use it to see across galaxies in near real-time. |
