First day at gym ( after 2 years :S )

Well, past year was so hard to me, and was drinking and eating more than habitual ( like a pig ) and its time to move on and put my self to do something better for me. So, i started the gym today and everything i can do today was 35 minutes of bike :S ... yeah, im so bad, i was thinking in one hour at least, but no chance, hope to get better in the next days

So you guys, to make this thread better, what are you doing in gym?

First month is definitely the hardest, especially if you were very active before. You continuously compare yourself to what you used to be able to do -- to the point where you want to punch yourself in the face. Don't knock yourself too hard -- 35 minutes on a bike can be grueling!

I'm doing martial arts twice a week, working on my 5K pace (towards hopefully a half this year!) and recently started at a local Crossfit box. Today was killer... squats, kettle bell swings, hollow rock sit-ups... followed by multiple reps through a barbell progression where you add more weight each go'round.

But, I feel great for having done it, and it sets a good mindset for the rest of the day.

Getting back into a "feel good" shape is a lot more about what you're eating than what you're doing, though what you're doing helps, obviously.

Good for you in doing something to make yourself feel better!! Keep it up!

It's only going to get easier from here, you are over the hardest part, stick with it. Congrats! I can't imagine not working out, I love it. I work out 5-6 times per week, Mon-Fri I get to the gym at 6:15am and workout for an hour either lifting weights or cardio, then hit the steam room for 10 mins before showering and heading to the office.

I never thought i'd have any interest in the gym and some of you might remember a thread i made on here a few months ago saying i had went for the first time at the ripe old age of 33. Thankfully i can say i am still going and do enjoy it. And it's nice to start seeing some of the results of lifting. I'm a skinny mofo so i wasn't going to try lose any weight...

                          Set long term goals.

Any workout program failures I've had is because I said something like "I need to lose 10 pounds in a month."

Be the guy who says "I'm going to add 10 pounds of muscle in a year". You may not totally reach that goal, but you will definitely burn off 10 pounds of fat trying. And any new muscle you've built will keep away the next 10 pounds of fat.

and fuck the scale. Get a tape measure.

one more tip for when you get up to speed....do sprints up a hill twice a week for 10 minutes.

I've been doing jiu jitsu 5-6 nights a week for the last 2 years. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. What these other guys said is very true. You've gotta make it a part of your life and not just something that you force yourself to do.

Eventually you will get to the point where you feel awful if you miss a day.

Definitely a good point. Just make it part of your daily routine and you'll fall into the groove a lot easier. My average gym visit is only 45 minutes, but most of the time it's either doing high intensity interval exercises or some lifting. By no means is that a short amount of time... unless you're an asshole playing games on your phone and using the bike at a leisurely pace.

Start out with moderate intensity the first week and work your way up, as your body gets accustomed to your exercise routine. Otherwise, you're going to be too sore to move after 2-3 days.

A good workout should be paired with a good diet. Good food is the clean fuel you need to power your workouts and build your muscles.

You'll feel great after getting into a regular workout routine.

After big gym pauses I do exercises for all muscles groups for the first days. I feel exhausted, yet good. I always wake up feeling more energized after a day at the gym.

Such good advice for beginners. Youre burning fat and gaining muscle at the same time, its so pointless.

Yeah you have to do a little bit of everything for your first few days atleast, if a beginner, maybe a full week

Lots of good advice from people here. best thing I seen was to use a tape measure instead of worrying about a scale (your going to get bigger before you get smaller, as the muscle builds under the fat). Food is the main thing that will make the biggest difference, but I wouldn't worry to much about it, The longer you go to the gym, these things will just fall into place. I wouldn't push yourself to hard at first. You do not want an injury to mess up your routine! When you get to the gym a good way to start and end is on the elliptical.

                                                        Good Luck

I had food poisoning Friday and it fucked me up for a few days. Can't wait to get some heavy deadlifting done tomorrow.
