Dude, they're only rated to handle so much of a load. And a space heater is one hell of a fucking load for a UPS. If you want to "test" the UPS, just hook your computer up to it, and unplug the UPS from the wall. That would be the best simulation of a power outage.

Which one did you pick up Juicy?

I went to Compusa, none of the dodo birds there knew anything at all. I bought one for 70 bucks. It said it would last 15 min if the juice in the house went bad. It cant handle the BIG LOAD I am unleashing on it.

I took the heater off the circuit and unhooked it from the wall and the thing worked. I guess it wasnt meant to handle space heaters.

I have an APC Back-UPS and it works great. Just unplug the UPS from the wall and it should continue to function and if the proper software is installed it will shut your system down.

An in-line UPS can help with blackouts but also with brownouts. A friend of mine had a brownout and fried her RAM and motherboard.

They are worth the $150 bucks or so

um, d00d, fucking duh! neither can you run a laser on anything less than a 600, and that's a small laser.

you tripped the breaker, in this case it must have been one of those auto-reset ones. that's why it still works. heheh.. the overload is supposed to come from the *other* side of the circuit. to test how long it lasts, start up all your computer shiznit and unplug the ups. then time how long your equipment stays up

there should be a test button cutoff that does the same thing, if you don't feel like pulling the plug out of the wall with it on.

Last summer I bought an APC Smart UPS 750XL with a second battery. The UPS Man had a fit bringing it into my house. Heavy mofo.

Course since then the power hasn't gone out.
