I have an APC Back-UPS and it works great. Just unplug the UPS from the wall and it should continue to function and if the proper software is installed it will shut your system down.

An in-line UPS can help with blackouts but also with brownouts. A friend of mine had a brownout and fried her RAM and motherboard.

They are worth the $150 bucks or so
