I would like to buy an external HD that is connected to my network either through wifi or RJ45 cable. It will turn on every day and backup my HDD automatically. Suggestions?

thinking about using one as an FTP server as well for clients ... my upload is about 75mBps but I can realistically push only about 10-14mBps... not sure why, been a big issue around here for sure .. I think big packets get sidelined for traffic

Interesting. I took a look at the 8-bay version. Wow! $977 - and they have 24 TB ones (3TB x 8) for over 2K! Wow.

So I'm wondering if the 24TB super-expensive model could be used for hosting tube videos for affiliates, or even running an actual tube site from. Crazy?

No, use it for personal storage or some cases like grapesoda mentions would work okay but not advised. Your ISP would not allow you to run a "server" from your home, that would not be an issue for grapesoda but if you are running a public site it would be a huge issue. Not to mention, download speeds for your users would be ass. Plus these were not built for that purpose, they would not handle it very well.

If you're using a Mac, you can purchase a Time Capsule. It's a Combo Wireless Router with 4 Ethernet Ports and 1,2 or 4TB Hard disk built in. It runs with Time Capsule software included with your Mac already and backs up your HD in the background. First it does a full backup and then a partial backup every every day. Then if you need to do a restore, you can restore your computer to the way it was on any exact date you want.

It works well! Just set it and forget it.

If you want something faster, you can use an external hard disk on USB, Thunderport or Firewire, by Promise Technologies any of a dozen others.

I use a USB 3.0 WD PAssport for backup and its been great. Almost the same transfer speed as an internal drive.

I would not be surprised apple does not allow you to use RJ45

Unless with adapter

Based on that and on the fact that apple boys tend to specify that they are using mac I would guess he was not talking about mac.

Acronis true image is the best for PC to back up full disk images full or incrementally.

I have one of those and I hate it. It's slow as fuck and you can't use it for anything else. (ie. plug it in and use it as an actual HDD)

I actually opened it up and pulled the drive out of it and purchased one of these:

Correct me if I am wrong. The 192 price is just the device with no HDD? And below you select your HDD size? 2 TB would be plenty enough for me.

I have a Drobo 5N using WD Red drives. LOVE IT!

I've got it set to automatically backup my MacBook Pro every 4 hours using Time Machine and it has ALL my archives on it dating back to 1998. Photo and video....

So Synology DiskStation 2-Bay is best for the normal user. I don't have gigs and gigs of videos / pictures laying around. Drobo 5N looks more like for the professional user with tons of data to backup.
