For me it's the W, A, S, D keys that have hard miles on them. (gaming)
My N key looks a bit worse for wear though, so does L. But H, I and O all look fine. You're on to something only in that we're both due for a new keyboard.

i think the letters are part of the plastic keys. All of them are still very clear and the keys work the same as they did when I bought it.

As far as letters go, only my "A" key is worn. I can't think of any keyboard shortcuts which use it, so I have no idea why.
Ctrl, Alt and Tab are looking pretty shiny (they started out textured ) |
