I guess i was more hung up on the beating the Instructor thing. Thats for sure not true. I never beat mine. None of his BlackBelt students have.

All good.

Just Dave

Best I can do against my instructor is a draw, and usually not even that.

TheSquealer 08-15-2014 07:45 PM

If i was able to beat the guy i trained with in Muay Thai, i'd immediately start posing and taking pictures,... then have my gloves bronzed and then give up training right away to make sure i go out on a high note.

My experience in martial arts is that those above you should always be better than you if they are actively training. Achieving the same belt is not the same as achieving the same skill level and experience.

A few pics with Anthony about 4 years ago. He was curious if I was any good at BJJ. lol

Had a knee injury and got way fat. Borrowed Anthony's gee set that day. Im 25 pounds lighter now and fit into my old school 'Howard Kimono Gee."

Just Dave

Good times. Dave ran a pressure cooker on me that night. Made me defend everything, kept me moving. I reached lactic acid threshold twice, threw up twice. Nothing sucked more than hearing Dave giggle at me while I threw up. Everywhere I went, Dave was waiting with a submission, or just crush me on my back. Anyone who's never trained or sparred against a BJJ Blackbelt has zero idea what I'm talking about. It's the most humbling experience ever. I've also trained with Todd Nathanson at their Gym, the man is walking encyclopedia of Jiu Jitsu. His boys are top notch coaches and competitors. If you are in the Chatsworth area, worth a visit. Let's just say we had a 10th P Blackbelt come in once and had trouble tapping one of our purples.

One on one, BJJ is the king of fighting arts.

After 7 years as a bluebelt, I'm now a purple. Blackbelt seems reachable now.

Have you reached that level of training that you aren't comparing yourself to your training partners, and comparing if you were better than yourself the day/week/month/year before?

I love Muay Thai. I've been Nak Muay longer than training BJJ, my shins are dented, my hands tore up, and I wouldn't give it up for the world.

I've even learned a trick or two from some of them. Mario from AshleyMadison, showed me something really cool, called the "Fat Guy" pass. :thumbsup

Tim, I'm glad to see you started training BJJ! Remember our talk in Costa Rica all those years ago, I knew one day you'd catch the bug.

I try to train with people better than myself always. I'm not really worried about being better than others, I do it to make sure that every time I train, I'm being pushed beyond my limits.

Have you been consistently training all these years? Seems like you started BJJ quite a few years ago now

Good for you man. Only to get better is train with people better than you.

I started Muay Thai back in my early 20's, kept with it on and off. I've stopped due to injuries a lot. Same with BJJ. I was about to quit everything as I wasn't seeing improvement anymore as I got older, started upping my mileage cycling. But it always comes back full circle, the need to get back on the mats to train. My split nowadays is 3 to 4 days BJJ, 2 days Thai. And I don't push as hard as I used too with it, MT is just too rough on the body. Sitting also has been wrecking havoc on my hips, got a standing desk to offset it. Good luck in your training.

TheSquealer 08-15-2014 10:39 PM

Funny you mentioned hips, I've been fighting that same thing from sitting. Finally went to a sports medicine guy, got X-rays been seeing a chiropractor and pt guy to loosen everything up again. I had muscle spasm in my hip (iliacus) and it was bad enough that it was pulling one leg up a 1/2". Also it snaps when moving over the hip bone - kinda popping like a knuckle crackingm or something. All basically from sitting a few years and letting it all get tighter and tighter. I am going to try like hell to never stop stretching ever again.

That was fun. Me telling you I'm a Black Belt is different than me showing you. lol

Training with lower belts for me is a different game plan. Coming after you with attacks and submissions isn't really cool. Especially because I'm Black and you were blue at the time. A very good Blue belt I might add.:thumbsup

What I do is let you do anything and everything you like, let you move, escape, throw fake attacks with no finishes and make it where nothing you do works. Then after a few minutes you start to feel that nothing works and you will start questioning if you actually know anything. (no disrespect)

Sounds mean, but what I'm actually doing is figuring out what you know and don't know, so when it comes time to teach and help you, I know what it is we can work on. Gageing you level. Tapping you over and over does nothing for both of us. Drooped my ego and Got tapping people out of my system when I was a purple belt. lol

Anthony is good and way knows his shit when it comes to BJJ. Knows its history, origins, who is who and knows all of the moves.

For me, it was everyday 2 times a day, payed my bills, competed for 15 years. Now its been 24 years in; Its more fun and games for me now, than being the very best at it.

Tournament style only. No weight class. Like the good ol days of MMA before they all became money hungry queers.

You mean "the good old days when the UFC promptly went bankrupt because no one wanted to watch an Olympic wrestler and Olympic sambo medalists lay on the ground, barely moving for 30 minutes, wrapped around each other like gay snakes with no idea how to strike or submit each other"? People want action. There's a reason Dana White and his partner got such a good deal on the UFC (2,000,000.00 I think??)

I am not looking this up as i type to sound smart so i am probably not 100% accurate. but initially when the L.A. Gracie guy started it, the idea was "style vs style" and every martial artists dream to finally see every style against another. What happened was that apart from the few really cool and often brutal fights, Hoyce and others like Taktarov, Severinson and other grapplers made it really boring. Strikers didn't know how to grapple. Grapplers didn't know how to strike. There were no rules basically, no rounds, no weight classes, no mouth guards, no gloves and so on. When White and his partners bought it, they implemented a bunch of rules to insure the sport wouldn't get shut down right away as it seemed it would (safety related stuff - gloves, mouth guards, can't hit back of head, can't gouge eyes, destroy someones groin etc etc), they implemented rounds to stop the 25 minute rolling around on the ground stalemates, they created fight pay structures to reward exciting fights/fighters, knockouts and so on.

I don't remember specifics really. I just remember being super excited about it as i was completely obsessed with Karate at the time and owned a school and also thought it was awesome to finally put style vs style to finally shut everyone up about how awesome one style is against another. It was the first real, legit "lets see who is talking shit and who has a practical fighting style" type competition so it was a big deal to anyone who practiced any sort of martial art. I remember after the first 5-6 or so we lost interest and it was more or less just kinda boring to watch. Tons of crazy hype and goofy theatrics, then they usually turned out to be largely unskilled fighters doing little to nothing in the cage.. and grapplers taking it to the ground for long periods of time which was boring.

TheSquealer 09-07-2014 09:29 PM

.... Anyway, I need my sleep. I'm up to what is usually 60 rounds a day/5 days a week between Muay Thai and boxing + doing cardio and i am sure Vendzilla is doing 2X more judging by his incredible confidence... and I only have a few more months before Vegas, so my work is cut out for me.

so we arranged the ring, cage etc and working on permits and insurance.

I am not sure you can offer cash...? That would likely fall under a whole other body of rules as a professional fight?
