Just listened to it again. I'm not wrong.

And plus, it's just one of the great songs of all time. All Time. Period.

What makes it the "best" guitar solo?

The guitar has never done anything for me. Acoustic or eclectic, neither really struck a chord. Puns aside, I'm not a big guitar fan. Nothing personal, I think it's a great background tool, but it just doesn't sound right as a solo. The same could be said about drum solos, I mean really. Now play an alto sax or piano solo, and panties start dropping.

No. The greatest thing about the solo of Sympathy for the Devil is that it's a one-note solo. Genius.

Good to know you wear panties. Based on your opinion of the guitar I think we could have guessed though.

For me I don't know if I have a favorite, both of Slash's solos on November Rain are up there. SRV's cover of "Little Wing" as well and some of Santana's early work like "Black Magic Woman" and similar stuff.

That Keith Richards solo on "Sympathy" does indeed fit perfectly in the song and that harsh tone on it was just...well...perfect.

As far as players who can play real fast, etc. I guess that it doesn't seem all that impressive next to Eddie and others who are so technically skilled.

But for being a part of communicating the idea of the song...yep, it's one of the best.

And actually communicating an idea with an instrument can be conceptually a lot more difficult than just wiggling your fingers as fast as you can on a piece of wood with 6 strings.

But like DynaMo said...it's definitely NOT a "one note solo".

I read an interview with Eric Clapton in Guitar Player many, many years ago where he talked about the "less is more" theory. He said he has been searching his whole life to be able to play a 1 note solo and have it mean something.

The guitar player from a Pink Floyd cover band I saw once told me that it's not the notes that Roger Waters chooses to play, it's the notes he chooses not to play... I wasn't sure if my mind was blown or if I wasn't high enough for the conversation.

My favorite group, been around for a long time and still rocking it after all these years, just a guitar, a bass and a drum set and they can still fill the arenas of the world. Their sound belongs to them and only them

I believe the best one note guitar solo has been credited to Neil Young in "Cinnamon Girl" which has been covered by nearly *everyone* including Friday nite bar bands.

"Blue Sky" by the Allman Brothers. Both Duane and Dickie's solos make this one of my all time favorites.

Becks Bolero

Eddie Van Halen was great but it seemed he never really growed as a player. He is like a one trick pony. Where you have someone like Clapton who transformed himself a few times in his life.

The amazing thing about neil young solos is he's not known as a lead guitarist and certainly not a technical one, but he killed it with this and a handful of others.

I'm a whammy bar massacre solo kind of guy...I know it may not be as technical as a lot of the examples in this thread, but they often make sense in the type of music I enjoy...

one of my favorite solos ever though is Hanneman's solo in AntiChrist

video is a little crude...

Kerry King's solo is ok in the song, but I really dig Hanneman's....it's nothing fancy or "technical" but fits the song so well

Where is the solo? I hear not only guitar, bit also other instruments. Or you mean solo is when there is less than 2 guitars?
