    What is the purpose of this scam?

    I sell a lot of stuff on craigslist as well as niche classified sites and from time to time I get people contacting me asking about the item and agreeing to buy it, but they never send the paypal payment.

    It's the same thing each time they give you shipping info then pretend to send you paypal but never do. Out side of getting your paypal address they really don't get any info from me so I'm trying to figure out what the angle is here.

    Are they just hoping you ship the shit with out checking your paypal for payment? Are there scammers that try this on large scale and just playing the numbers actually getting stuff? It just seems very odd and I've had it happen a few times now so I know it's not just a random mistake.

          It's an old scam that works only on the dumbest of people. They tell you they have paid through paypal and then send you a fake paypal screenshot to prove it. If they had really paid you, it will show in YOUR paypal account.

          I've sold a few cars online and cars always brings out the assholes with the most elaborate scams and stories. They offer to pay exactly what you are asking, or more even. They send a fake screenshot of the payment supposedly made. They send someone else to pickup the item that you have to pay cash for as some kind of transportation fee. They can't pickup the car themselves because they live on an oil platform, etc.

                  Internet scams are often based on huge amount of attempts. Do this scam to 100 000 people and surely some will fall into it.

                          That doesn't happen.. they just try to claim the money was sent. I assume to make you feel bad and trick you into shipping the item for free..

                              I stopped trying to sell anything on craigslist because it's full of people who will try to haggle you to death. I lost count of how many idiots I told to fuck off after generously lowering my price and it still not being good enough. Fuck Craigslist.

                                  I just make it very clear the moment they start to haggle what my min price is. I always price something with the assumption the price will drop but I stand very firm with the price I set as the low ball. Usually my low ball is what I really want for the item, so if they don't haggle it's just extra money to me.

                                  When or if they try to get me lower I just tell them no. The way I look at it, is I have something they want. Either they want it bad enough to pay what I'm asking or they don't. Either way it sells for what I want to sell it for or it doesn't sell. The only times I ever go lower than what I want out of it, is if I've had the item a long time or there isn't a demand which I thought there was.

                                      I was actually just talking about an instance of this happening with somebody I knows child that slightly autistic. They prey on the simple minded.

                                      the kid (22yrs olb but naive and 15 in mental) sent his iPad to fucking Nigeria with this scam.

                                          my scam was, "come and photograph an event for me, money's no object."
                                          i quote them$500, they send me a cashier's check for $2500, which will actually clear temporarily through your bank. they say they accidentally overpaid you and can i personally pay the caterer the additional $2,000. seeing that the check cleared, one might wire the "caterer" $2K, it's not until about a week later that your bank tells you that it was a fake check.

                                                  Most people figure this out way before any deal is made/PayPal screen caps sent. How many times have you fallen for this?
