I'm pissed and need to speak out.

I have a lot of friends in this business thats working thier tails off trying to make a living. And I'm seeing more and more scams out there and it's pissing me off.

I have a few things to say then I'll feel better:

1. Domains with no design, personality, traffic, or content of any nature are not worth thousands of dollars people. Maybe they came with those price tags in 1997 or 1998 but today domains are a dime a dozen.

2. Programs that are free for download on sourceforge.net should never come with a price tag of 4-500 dollars for installation. If this is what your going to do to friends of mine then prepare to be blacklisted from the rest of my contacts.

3. Designers right now have bad names. Yes a few bad apples spoiled the bunch. Me nor my friends will not at any point give you 100% up front for work and be told we can expect results in 3-4 weeks ... If this is how you want to treat people I send your way expect your name to be scratched from my list of refferals.

As you all know I own cheatski.com well fair warning to the scammers out there ... I'm going to start doing more with that domain!!!!!!! You scam a friend of mine after I sent you the work in the first place expect your name to be listed there. I will make it public for all to see.

There is plenty of legitimate money in this industry whether you be a host, programmer, designer, traffic broker, or any of the other people webmasters need for support and services everyday. I am making it a goal to oust scammers from my network of friends.

There I feel better now ... I think I'll go fuck myself while I have the chance.

Sorry to burst your bubble...but that's exactly how open source is suppossed to work. Don't want to pay? Have fun figuring it out for yourself. You've got the source code

Well let me rephrase this. Open source comes with a GNU license ... it is ILLEGAL to sell that software as your own. Yes you can charge what you want to install it but you should never never never claim you wrote it and then sell it as exclusive software.

Your claim is right I represented what happened the wrong way.

There I feel better about this subject now I'll go back to fuicking myself.

That does suck. But you can actually do that and adhere to the GPL at the same time. That license can be a bit schitzo.

you're right about there being a helluva lot of scamming shitheads in this business but the examples you gave aren't scammers.

as the guy above said, just cuz those Sourceforge projects are free open source doesn't mean there isn't 400 or 500 dollars worth of work for somebody to get it running the way you want on your server.

as for designers taking 3 or 4 weeks and asking for the money upfront. 3 or 4 weeks to get your design is entirely reasonable.
No designer with any success is waiting around with no work on his hands just ready the minute you or somebody has a job for him. you'll wait longer for the top guys than a month.
As for 100% payment up front, that's the designer's choice. It should only be 50%, the rest due upon completion of the project.

pick better targets.

Heh well it's that exact thing that pissed me off 30 minutes ago. A friend of mine was charged 250 dollars for a simple install of phpmyadmin.

It's things like that I will be exposing.

I agree if someone gets a script modified thats totally between the customer and the programmer but to outright sell a script like phpmyadmin with no modifications at all and say you wrote the damn thing let me catch this again and I will definetly expose the person doing it.

If someone can't do it, and is willing to pay $250. Then hell yeah it's worth the $250. I wouldn't pay it, but I'm sure those people wouldn't be charging that if someone wasn't. They're probably targeting a business crowd. $250 to install a piece of software that could help them manage their data...that sounds like a deal to me.

You just gave me an extra $250 padding for my small business proposals. Thanks

Let me show you the american way then. If your a customer of mine I'll instal it for free for you. If your not it will be 15 dollar installation. Because for the 2 minutes it takes thats a fair and resonable price.

In that particular case, you're not exposing anything. These people are operating within the GPL license. Your friend hired them to do the job, that was their cost. You can't blame them, they're not doing anything wrong.

yeah, if they paid it, it was their fault. they should have shopped around "payment for services rendered" isn't covered in the gpl to my knowledge.

The 100% up front payment ... 3-4 weeks for a good designer is a reasonable timeframe.

2 minutes to install, then 25 e-mails back and forth asking how to use it, then another 2 e-mails every month or so asking how to restore it after they accidentally deleted it. That's worth only $15.00 to you?

Ok now you opened another realm. If the contract was for tech support on it thats a whole different story and again you can charge someone for tech support under the gnu license.

But after the install he was told look at the docs I don't provide support for the product unless you want to pay XX per hour.

and if they did something like deleted it then that voids the install and you charge again right ?

I have no problems with that ... again like I said it was presented as "I wrote this program"

Ok so you pay designers you don't know and never heard of 100% up front ?

Cool good to know I have a new business plan now. Last night I was offered a killer design domain name for sale let me go register it and when I make a deal under a new gfy name I'll expect 100% up front and no flack for it because a few people now have said thats legit.

Even if I've heard of the designer or even worked with them before, I never pay up front. That's just the nature of Service Work--and the graphics guys I deal with know this and don't do it any other way. There are guys who ask money up front before rendering any service and I'm sure some of them are good and some actually produce converting materials but I'll never use them b/c I pay after the work is delivered and fine tuned.

Just my
