    Fucking black flies

    No idea where they are coming from, but I had about 20 (at least) fat black houseflies in the house today. If movies are to be believed, there's some serious supernatural shit about to go down in my living room.

    I keep a clean house, so I'm really curious where they are coming from.

                      Put ghostbusters on speeddial.

                      We get little flying gnats in my loft office. Our place is 128 yrs. old with old dimensional lumber - a magnet for bugs and insects. They seem to get in to the dead space behind the attic walls...and I'm not a fan of crawling in through the hatch to spray.

Unlike more familiar blow flies, such as the bluebottle genus Phormia, they do not present a health hazard because they do not lay eggs in human food. They are strictly parasitic on earthworms; the females lay their eggs near earthworm burrows, and the larvae then infest the worms. However, the flies are a nuisance; when the adults emerge in the late summer or autumn, they enter houses to hibernate, often in large numbers; they are difficult to eradicate because they favour inaccessible spaces such as roof and wall cavities. They are often seen on windows of little-used rooms. They are also sometimes known as attic flies.
                                                                  Any cracks at all in brick, or around windows or in soffits, and the young flies will get in. As soon as the warm weather hits, we have to vacuum them up daily.

                                                                  Black-flies are worse, they are the small ones that come out in the late spring/early summer and bite.

                                                                      They over-winter in attics, wall voids, etc. I had a huge infestation of them a few years back when I lived in the country in a brand new house.

                                                                      Nothing to do with the cleanliness of the house either. They get in for the warmth in the fall then can't get back outside in the spring.

                                                                                  If you live in Maine or New Hampshire, you get fly's twice a year, ladybugs twice a year and fucking huge horse fly's that can take a chunk of flesh out of you if they get the chance. Then you get little black flys for a two month period in the spring. In a way its good for the local birds as they have a ton of fresh food available. And i had never seen so many woodpeckers until moving here....
