I had never heard of this, but it's a great story from a computer / video game history view.

Atari buried these cartridges on purpose because it was one of the biggest failures of all time and the over-production of this garbage was insane. Like MILLIONS of cartridges. Atari fucked up their business model by re-licensing the technology of their system as well as knockoff games to places such as Sears and Radio Shack.

I'm not quite sure why anyone would expend the time and effort to dig up those old game cartridges when they were such an abysmal failure.

It was them that buried them. It was a massive legend in video game history. ET on the 2600 was the worst game ever made. They couldn't sell them, so buried them. No one knew if it was true, until today.

There is a lot of money to be made in selling these recovered games. Put the mythical cartridge and damaged box in a frame and sell it.

Indeed, marketing, what it will be all about, if someone has salvage rights to it, could make a killing. Bullshit baffles brains

For any fans (I actually LOVED this game, and still play it sometimes) who want to play a "fixed" version that eliminates some of the more annoying bugs:

That would probably make this the biggest archeological finds of this century.
