    I Just got Ass raped.

    I took my car to the shop as I needed the timing chain replaced. The guy called me back and told me it would be $1675. I told him I had $1400 cash he said "I guess I could do it for that." I said great and dropped my car off last Thursday .He called me today and said my car was ready. I get a ride and show up with 14 hundred dollar bills only to be told the bill was $1873.95. I told him "You said on the phone you would do it for $1400 cash." He said "No I didn't if you want your car I need $1873.95."


    That's bullshit huh?

                              oh, for some reason it seemed like all you had to spend on the repair was $1400. yeah, if he knew you had more to spend on the work, then he just agreed to the terms to get guaranteed work by getting your car. the extra $200 over the $1600 was prolly to teach ya one for trying to deal with an auto shop.

                                                              I bought the car from one of my friends and the two questions I had for him were can you fix it and does it have a chain or belt. I thought a chain would last almost for ever. Who know's what they really did to it. My friend couldn't fix is cuz there is some kind tool you need to hold the engine together when they pull it out. I have a VW so he didn't have the tool. When I need work it changes into a BMW.

                                                                  You'd better hope he did it right too. I had one guy improperly replace mine a few years ago, and it totally killed the engine. When I went back to give them what-for the place was out of business. Engine was toast.

                                                                  Now we've found shop that's reasonably priced, honest, knows their shit, does all the repairs on time, etc. It's a luxury.

                                                                              When I was 20 I had a similar situation (this was in the early 90's). My car would just die while driving down the road. I took it in and they checked it out. They told me the timing chain was slipping and needed to be replaced. They quoted me $450 for the work and I had them do it. What was supposed to be a 2 or 3 day job at the most turned into a 3 week job. They kept calling me and telling me they found this and they found that and had to fix it. I had to have it done because I needed the car and I had to rent a car this entire time which added to the cost.

                                                                              In the end my bill came up to about $1600. I drained my account and borrowed some from a friend and got the car back. Two days later it did the same exact thing it did before and died while going down the road. I took it to another garage and they told me it was my distributor cap. It had a crack and when it heated up it would expand and cause the car to misfire. All that other stuff was likely not needed. They charged me $50 to fix it and the problem was solved.

                                                                              A friend of mine's dad was a lawyer at the time. When I told him what happened he was pissed and went after the other garage. They eventually settled with us and gave me $1000 of my money back.

                                                                              I learned my lesson then. If possible get two opinions and get the price in writing.

One bad thing is that a similar scam can happen at the dealer. A friend who used to work in the customer-facing side of the garage told me that their mechanics are trained to inspect the car and look for wear and to make a list. The "mechanic" who calls the owner of the car, will then try to upwell him or her on repairing lots of other things that may not need repairing or that still have some life left in them.
