Online Piracy Finally In the Crosshairs

From Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/willia...b_5086820.html

From the article: "After watching all three hours of testimony, it was clear that the congressional representatives, understood just how bad things had become for artists. It was nothing less than a revelation for those like myself who have been following the destruction of piracy for years. Every member of the subcommittee saw the need to provide greater protection for the individual artist. The cruel absurdity of hundreds of millions of nearly worthless take down notices every year was finally inescapable."

I'd be encouraged, but after the latest SCOTUS ruling on campaign donations I'd put my money on Google, et al, easily beating the artists and producers.

What would the ruling on campaign donations have to do with a ruling on piracy?

I'm not sure I see any connection. The recent ruling by the Supreme Court was based on their interpretation of the Constitution and Freedom Of Speech.

I don't' think that stealing content is in any way linked to Freedom Of Speech.

Or do you just mean that their last decision was so dumb that they are likely to make another stupid decision?

We can always hope that someone will eventually do something. Piracy is too ingrained in our society. People who never would have dreamed to stealing content 15 years ago now regard it as their right.

The campaign donations ruling means unlimited amounts of money to politicians. Who has more more money, Google or individual artists? So which way is any legislation (if any) going to tilt--towards Google or towards the artists? Do the math.

Oh I see what you're saying.
You're talking about legislation by politicians.

I was more referring to a court's ruling.

free porn is ok as long as the content owners agree to their content being given out for free...nothing wrong with that...but when somebody steals somebody elses work and calls it "sharing" or what ever the fuck, then that is pure theft...

you fully understand this, of course, but pretend not to...

Normally I would agree but the economy is in pretty bad shape. Piracy, the Internet and tech companies like google have played a huge role in that. All 3 are destroying jobs faster than they can be replaced. It is no great feat of understanding to see that all of the money in the world will not make any difference at all if in the end it there are no jobs.

Now this is not me agreeing or disagreeing with you. All I can say is that I can see it going both ways.

And here's an editorial, by a law professor at the University of Chicago, arguing that the SCOTUS McCutcheon decision was wrong: The First Amendment Doesn?t Protect the Right to Buy the American Government

From the article: "That these five justices persist in invalidating these regulations under a perverse and unwarranted interpretation of the First Amendment is, to be blunt, a travesty. These decisions will come to be counted as among the worst decisions in the history of the Supreme Court."

Great article, let's hope they finally do something about it. If all pirate sites were removed from listings it would be a revelation.

It's the other way around, destruction from piracy.

Will be interesting to see who is still putting out content in 12 months. I can say that youtube and facebook are rushing to musicians to license their content for public use. Comes with a royalty. Just signed the papers last month.

+1

Don't have any illusions to the contrary. The only thing possible are some collateral affects.

Problem with that is, that those willing to go old school, are already pirates themselves, which leaves us in the same position as the last 15 years. No one will do anything.
