Mastercard and online PIN...
I know this has probably been bought up here before, but there is an article on this you might be interested in:
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/...826483435.html Now that can't be good for business. |

Seems like a good thing to me. It moves the liability to the banks and is likely to increase consumer confidence in making purchases online. There might be a bit of pain associated with it since it will be harder for a teenager to borrow mommy or daddy's credit card to join a site, but those sorts of transactions often end up as refunds or chargebacks anyways.

This is Mastercard's version of Verified By Visa. The gossip is all the US banks are going to support Verified By Visa within a year. The good news is, supposedly, no chargebacks!

It is a good idea in some ways, but from the way I read that article, it looks like it's a voluntary program which means the chargeback jockeys won't use it. So I don't see how it's going to help us much, and it may hurt us because adding anything else to the signup process just means some people won't make it through.
I mean, some guy surfing at three in the morning after a few drinks ...he is likely to not remember his nifty new pin, right? Brutal

pin numbers should have been used 5 years ago online. i think credit card companies have been sitting on their hands and collecting chargeback fees.
its holding back online sales for sure. hopefully visa, mastercard and amex get their shit together soon. |

Hi All,
Netbilling and other processors are ready to go with Visa 3D (Verified by Visa) and Mastercard as well. Visa pins will go into effect April 1st. This will shift liability for initial charges to the cardholder only as far as the customer begin able to say "I never made the charge". However, they still will be able to dispute saying "I never got what I was promised", or "Not what I ordered", "I never agreed to recurring billing" etc... It will be great thought to help initial disputes and verify identity. Other questions? Mitch

So on April 1st, anyone who wants to pay for something online needs to have a PIN code?
I have a Visa, but I don't have any PIN code for it, how will I be able to buy anything?

And (not sure with 3D secure but i'm sure in the case of UCAF) the bad news is, no recurring allowed. |

Visa will start requiring banks to issue new card with pin codes. They will encourage existing cardholders to register online for a pincode. Mitch

well I know that with visa, all rebills won't be 'verfied by visa'. they will just be regular transactions with chargeback capability. Only initial can be V-by-V.

I don't believe recurring transactions will die, but I would still like to hear opinions from some companies like CCBill or Epoch.

BRISK,
There is no final verfication either way about recurring from Mastercard yet. However, Visa will allow recurring to be protected if authorized at purchase time, most likely. I will get more specifics and post soon. All of our merchants will have full control of how they want to implement the programs and use them with our system, as usual. Mitch / Netbilling
