Your overall take on the Sochi Olympics 2014
MEDAL COUNT
Did they suck? Were you disappointed a bomb didn't go off? Did you enjoy watching the news footage of Russian cossacks beating the shit out of those girls from Pussy Riot? Personally I've thought that so far these games have gone much better than a lot of people gave Russia credit for. CBC staffers and many Canadian athletes themselves are all saying their stay over there has been pretty great so far. But what a crushing blow for the host nation having their so-called 'dream team' of hockey superstars go down in miserable defeat, and to the lowly FINS! I mean if it had at least been CANADA that beat them there would be some honor salvaged. But the Fins???!!! Putin must be seething. Perhaps we'll pit our women's team against them in 2018 and see if they can do any better. :D Seriously I've watched a lot of the games and I must say the Russian fans and locals all seem to be very hospitable, fun-loving and friendly. Every time the Russian curlers would throw a rock through the house their fans would cheer anyway, even though it was to blank an end. Funny as hell but great to see nonetheless. Russia has been an awesome host.

I think the Olympics are the same every time - A country puts it's best foot forward, tries to impress the rest of the world, and some do better than others, but for the most part it's all the same.

There were so much shit surrounding 2014 Olympics, that the sport part didn't even register.
For me it was more about Russian nazi government and Puting stroking his tiny cock. |

Only a few days to go... A nice mash-up compilation video of highlights from the Sochi Games so far (from a US perspective, but it still kind of captures the spirit - substitute your own athletes): Going to be interesting to see what Brazil comes up with in two years... ADG |

I think the Olympics have lost a lot of their shine, too many other things for people to entertain themselves with. The time difference between Sochi and North America doesn't help, big events live in the middle of the night and early morning here.
The Winter Olympics have always had a quaint ski resort vibe to them held in snowy mountainy places like Lake Placid, Salt Lake City, Albertville, Sapporo, Torino - holding them in a warm weather place like Sochi took away that ambiance. As amazing as the buildings they constructed are it made these Games feel like a wannabe Summer Games, too big. The Russian hockey team losing in the qualifying round also took a lot of steam out of the Olympics. I can't imagine the mood in Vancouver 4 years ago if Canada hadn't even made it to the medal round. The arena was very quiet for both semi-final games and lots of empty seats. The Russian hockey program needs to do the same hard look at itself the Canadians have done several times when it has met with failure in international play. I think it's the Russian NHL players' fault, all about the money - probably a reflection of Russia post-Soviet era. Hockey is the marquee team sport at the Winter Olympics and as a lifelong hockey player and fan the hockey has been underwhelming. The Finns and Swedes play that boring trap defense at all times, the other European teams like the Swiss play not to lose. The only halfway entertaining games were USA-Russia and Canada-USA and that game today was not a classic, the US could do nothing offensively against Canada. Canada could very well lose against the Swedes who play their system extremely well and have Lundqvist in goal but it's easy to see that Canada still has superior depth in talent to all these teams.

Just thankful we haven't had another Munich or Boston Marathon episode.
Overall, I think Russia's done a good job with the Olympics. Western media has done their best to over-hype the negativity and exploit the minor setbacks. |

Finland 5, USA 0
Try telling the Fins that a Bronze medal doesn't mean much. Selanne goes out swinging with his 4th Olympic medal, leaving an overall scoring record that will be hard for anyone to beat. This game meant a lot to those guys, in fact it meant everything. To the USA it obviously meant next to nothing, like it was beneath them. Makes me wonder what would have happened had Rask been fit enough to play in their game against Sweden. Would it be Canada playing Finland in the final? We'll never know. What I do know is that the Fins played their hearts out today, and the Americans join Russia in their misery. I predict a 3-2 Canada win for gold tomorrow, followed by a somewhat subdued closing ceremonies (because it wasn't a complete medal sweep for Russia) and a final declaration that these games were all-in-all a great success.

This may have been the tightest most cohesive team Canada we've ever put together, and that's saying a lot considering all the absolutely legendary teams we've had in the past. The Canadians put aside any ego they might have had coming into this tournament, and followed Babcock's lead and philosophy of not being a group of "stars" but rather a team who supports one another. And the result showed it.
Sweden had the best powerplay of the tournament but it was no match for Canada's D. They were allowed very little offense and barely had a shot on goal in the 3rd period. There's the difference I guess. When Canada is down 2-0, 3-0 etc, our players never quit, It's never over until the last whistle blows. The Swedes looked deflated and dejected by the 3rd though, and were stymied by Canada's dogged resilience and their machine-like penalty kill. Canada never trailed in the entire tournament. Never had to come from behind. Only allowed 3 goals the entire tournament. Many European teams tried playing their 'big ice trap' style of game on the Canadians, to no avail. We had too much size and speed, and were able to dump the puck in and then go get it. We shut down the USA's massive offense as well. The reffing was about as impartial as it gets --- just like I said it would be. All those squawking beforehand about there being Canadian refs were out to lunch and simply have a lot to learn about how they're trained at that level of hockey in Canada. Now come the "Ya but's" --- Ya but team Sweden had a bunch of their best guys out due to injury. --- Yes, so what? To that I would say where's their depth? Canada could have TEN guys get injured and fill those gaps with ten other guys who are just as solid. In fact Canada could have put a second entire team together with the depth we have. And the fact is there were quite a handful of guys Sweden left off their roster whom could have been there to step in, several NHL'ers in fact. --- The KHL really shined in this tournament, like usual. They really showed up the NHL --- Anyone saying this simply doesn't know what they're talking about. Fact is, of the final 50 players in the gold medal game, forty-nine of them were NHL'ers. Argument over as far as I'm concerned. Congrats to Sweden on their Silver, they played a great tournament and deserved 2nd place. And congrats to Canada on defending their 2010 medal and once again winning the GOLD. :D

Personally I wasn't expected that Russia will be the 1st by both the number of gold medals and by the number of the medals overall.
Well, I was quite surprised by those results.

I didn't like the atmosphere, too few spectators at the events :-/
Also sucked that Norway lost some sure shot gold medals that bumped us down to #2 on the medal statistic

Watching the closing ceremonies now. I must say CBC did another absolutely smashing job of covering these games, along with TSN and SportsNet. Between those three networks working in cync I was able to watch every single event either in whole or in part via the highlights.

The ceremonies were incredible, though. The pyro at the end was amazing. And we laughed when the Russians poked fun at themselves with the dancers and the lighted Olympic rings - intentionally leaving one ring closed for awhile before opening it. That was clever. |

Great Games and the stadiums and arena's where off the chart as we could see. great facilities for our Athletes.
I think USA is a bit sour and say they don't like winter games cause... They can't even finish in top 3 although per capita they should be in there. Good Games over all and very happy Canada finished in top 3 countries |

Congrats on buying gold medals... At one moment there were 10 gold for Russia and 5 of them were earned by Korean and USA people.. It is sad day when sport powers like Russia has to buy their medals and use foreigners.

I'm a big fan of the Olympic committee constantly saying we don't care about politics we're here to compete.
On the same turn, I have a hard time taking it seriously when 13 year olds are skating for gold metals.

The snow conditions were horrible, especially for the downhill skiing and slalom. Also, whoever set up the slalom on the final days did a poor job. I think half the skiers didn't even make it all the way down.
Seems there was some controversy with the figure skating judging too.

My favorite part was when that Russian figure skater was hugging everyone with a huge winning smile before the scores for Yuna Kim were even announced. Topped only by the warm embrace and "Thank you" she gave one of the Russian judges who had just gifted her with the decidedly undeserved gold medal.
Right up there with whipping Pussy Riot.

CBC's app was excellent. I watched the Vancouver 2010 Olympics on their online coverage with Silverlight, which was good at the time, but a bit buggy. The CBC app this time around worked flawlessly in HD on my ipad/apple tv and I didn't miss my cable at all.
Hot. Cool. Yours. feels like a bad translation. With the amount of money spent, I was half expecting the kind of ground-breaking stuff that China rolled out for theirs. So that was disappointing. Where did the money go exactly? Why didn't they use the Zamboni after the game? I'm sure there were logistics problems behind the scenes. Oh, and hockey.
