Google Search Results

I know I sound like a broken record and I really wish I could move away from relying on G traffic but it's not so easy.

Hit Again! a few days ago, multiple sites dropped according to GWT.

Anyone else get hit around the 7th Feb?

Google makes changes to its algorithm about twice a day.

Were the sites interlinked/on the same IP?

Google is fucking with you.

They get off on this sort of thing. They are laughing at you at this very moment and plotting their next evil move against you!

Around the 7th my sites increased in search traffic from google. Albeit my site is newer but it seemed to have a positive effect.

Do you rely heavily on those links? I don't think there'd ever be an actual penalty for that, but the diminishing returns on them put you in a vulnerable spot, especially if you're getting more pages indexed without new inbound link juice.

Are the serps just shittier or is there a significant drop in rankings? A small drop in rank can be a big drop in traffic but it's easy enough to make up.

I saw a drop in Webmaster Tools but in Analytics the #'s were pretty steady. Might be just a bug in GWT.

Traffic for me is decreasing steadily since October but the drop in GWT isn't like what I see in the stats. Sure traffic dropped but it's not as dramatic as in Google Tools.

I can't believe it's a bug though.

Nexcom28, one of the best things you can do here is simply not to panic and make a pile of changes. I can tell you, a LOT of people have noticed a discrepancy and sharp spike in Webmaster Tools late last week (and this includes some major site owners I speak with). But what happens more often than not in this business is people see a sudden drop and immediately think they need to make changes -- and in the process possibly end up doing more harm than good.

Google and the other engines are constantly making tweaks and changes and then usually once the dust settles, things go back to normal. My advice is not to panic and take a more wait-and-see approach for a couple of weeks. You'll drive yourself absolutely crazy staring at Google Stats and Webmaster Tools all day.

Just keep focusing on your site, and the user experience, and keep building up your links and traffic -- making sure to keep things relevant along the way.

Good luck.

Google does not work very well as a search engine.

It is basically very poor and finding things on the internet.

Very true.

But again, why such a big discrepancy?

Hard to say, I do not work at Google. And I'd argue that anyone that says they do know for certain is simply arrogant and likely trying to sell you something, such as SEO services.

What I would suggest is that there are some algorithmic changes happening, as they always are, and it is showing in WMT versus Analytics. I know for us, GA actually shows an increase in SE traffic while WMT shows a slight decline on the 7th. This could be something as simple as one of the data centers reporting to WMT was not yet merged with the index, or maybe one of the country specific indexes were impacted, etc. Who knows?

What I do know after all these years is that making panic moves because of a sudden drop is ill advised and that you're better off waiting until the dust settles and things normalize. Suffice it to say, a lot of SEO Experts and services are likely doing quite well for themselves since February 7th ;)

If you send me your URL I can take a look at it for you. Drops like that can be caused by any number of reasons, from simple ranking shifts that will eventually settle to link devaluations that you have little control over. You should definitely understand exactly what is going on before making any changes.

I had the same problem. I created my first site (since I decided to return to adult) and made the decision to create high quality content. I worked real hard for over 6 months and Google rewarded me. I got really good results which I believed were justified.
I may have made some mistakes regarding buying links (but only a few) or redirecting domains with lots of backlinks to my site but nothing prepared me for the kick in the teeth I got back in October.

My traffic on this domain dropped 80% to date.

Prior to October I had already bought a new domain, same niche, same SEO and I had already added some content. After October I decided to work both sites together, I hoped that the older site would recover however sadly it didn't - month on month it got worse and worse.

The newer site however started to get traffic. Eventually, prior to the 7th it was almost to the levels I was getting with my old site but now this seems to be hit as well (certainly according to gwt).
