This sport must be interesting...
![]() "Watching American Football reminds me of internet in the 90's - It's exciting when something actually happens, but most of the time you just sit around waiting, probably eating a snack to ease the boredom, and in the end it's often ruined by a stupid call." ![]() Even though I'm a NFL fan this made me laugh! ![]() |

That's what the DVR was invented for. Record the game, start watching an hour into it, and fastblast through every commercial break, through all the standing around in between plays, --pause whenever there's a cheerleader shot -- , skip past all the waiting around for a ref to make a decision on a reviewable play...
and enjoy the game the way it was meant to be enjoyed: by turning a 3 and a 1/2 hour ordeal into a one hour football game.

Commercial breaks would piss me off big time in 'merica.
Even watching the Superbowl here in the UK, rather than commercials all the time they just cut to the studio for a few mins. Rather that than watching Pepsi ads.. |

OK I know its popular and all I get that but what i dont understand is why...
First it is chock full of homoerotic imagery there is absolutely no doubt that it appeals to latent homosexuality Football certainly doesnt seem like something that would be popular with American males...maybe there IS a lot of latent homosexuality here....

I am an NFL fan (and fan of other sports as well). The NFL taps into something primal in people. It is kind of like a modern day gladiatorial games. The sports networks and reporters not on celebrate how tough these guys are and how hard they hit, but the nearly worship their ability to hit other guys and play in pain. It is presented as if playing the game in pain is some how valiant. We in America love valor. We like to feel like we are tough. We want to feel like we can't be beat and national pride is hammered into us from birth (we aren't alone in that aspect, many countries do this). So for many people they see America as being tough and they consider themselves tough and they want to watch a tough guys game. They want the big hits. It is the same reason heavyweight boxing is often more popular than the lower weight classes. People want to see two guys hit each other hard. Football is also something many kids in this country can do from a young age. From age 5 (I think) you can play football. When you do this the coaches instill into you a sense of teamwork and pride. You have comradery with your teammates. I have friends that played high school football and still talk to their teammates from those years (even though we are all old farts in our 40's now). The only thing the have in common with them is being on that team with them. So the game projects a sense of teamwork, toughness and pride and many people want to be affiliated with that. Plus, it is wholly American. You may occasionally come across a player here or there from another country, but most are from the US. In baseball and hockey there are a ton of guys from other teams. Just a few thoughts. |
