First it is chock full of homoerotic imagery there is absolutely no doubt that it appeals to latent homosexuality
Football certainly doesnt seem like something that would be popular with American males...maybe there IS a lot of latent homosexuality here....

Here is my theory.
I am an NFL fan (and fan of other sports as well). The NFL taps into something primal in people. It is kind of like a modern day gladiatorial games. The sports networks and reporters not on celebrate how tough these guys are and how hard they hit, but the nearly worship their ability to hit other guys and play in pain. It is presented as if playing the game in pain is some how valiant.
We in America love valor. We like to feel like we are tough. We want to feel like we can't be beat and national pride is hammered into us from birth (we aren't alone in that aspect, many countries do this). So for many people they see America as being tough and they consider themselves tough and they want to watch a tough guys game. They want the big hits.
It is the same reason heavyweight boxing is often more popular than the lower weight classes. People want to see two guys hit each other hard.
Football is also something many kids in this country can do from a young age. From age 5 (I think) you can play football. When you do this the coaches instill into you a sense of teamwork and pride. You have comradery with your teammates. I have friends that played high school football and still talk to their teammates from those years (even though we are all old farts in our 40's now). The only thing the have in common with them is being on that team with them.
So the game projects a sense of teamwork, toughness and pride and many people want to be affiliated with that.
Plus, it is wholly American. You may occasionally come across a player here or there from another country, but most are from the US. In baseball and hockey there are a ton of guys from other teams.
Just a few thoughts.
