We still have a federal death penalty but generally it is up to the individual states some do some dont. Federal Capital Crimes are relatively rare.

As was stated before, there is a federal death penalty, but it is rarely used. There are 32 individual states that have the death penalty. Some like Texas use it on a regular basis and others like Oregon hardly every use it.

Many years ago I've watched some movie where prisoners are sent to distant and remote island somewhere far away and once there, they were on their own. Old movie, but good idea. IN case that they try to go away, they are hit by something from air.It is up to them how they will organize their life there and will they survive. Recently I think this is wrong - not because it's wrong for a government to kill someone for comitting murder, but because it's not really a punishment at all. We should put them into a small, dark cell, no books, no visitors, and feed them nothing but bread and water for the rest of their lives.

It is not cruel and unusual punishment; Solitary confinement is already a perfectly accepted practice. Would also save a lot of money too.

I found semi-recent data on Moscow. In 2012 447 murders and attempted murders, I don't have numbers on this year yet, but New York is at 279 at the beginning of November. So today, maybe 330.

I'm not sure why anyone would brag about either number, neither are good, absolutely not sure why one would lambaste the other when both are pretty damn close to the same.

If you really want to brag about having 50 or so less murders a year, feel free. You are probably the only one believing Russian numbers anyway. :-)
