I used to be okay with it - you kill someone, and we kill you back.
Recently I think this is wrong - not because it's wrong for a government to kill someone for comitting murder, but because it's not really a punishment at all. We should put them into a small, dark cell, no books, no visitors, and feed them nothing but bread and water for the rest of their lives.
It is not cruel and unusual punishment; Solitary confinement is already a perfectly accepted practice. Would also save a lot of money too.
