We have a bastardized socialism. True socilism cant work here because when it comes down to it, most people dont want it. The only way for socialism to work is to keep it efficient and hold people accountable for their actions, and that will never happen.

And people here would never go for facism because they are so used to having pretty broad freedom. And political views are too evenly split.

In defense of Joe Sixpack and any other Australian that views or replies to this thread: No Australian citizen get's a single dollar from the US for nothing, so don't go with the "we give everyone money" BS.

The only thing we know about America is your television shows, some of your companies investing into Australian business' (which make news at times) and the odd tourist that comes from America to visit our country.

The one thing that is self evident, is that you (US citizens that have not travelled outside the US) are very ignorant to how the world outside the US is, because your media only talks about specific things directly related to America.

I don't know if that is healthy for America, as it leads to a lot of confusion by many US born citizens when relating to; and having conversations about anything global. For the most part to be in America, you have to be an American.

Where as, to live in Australia, it's totally fine that you're foreign, as our country has so many ethnic and non ethnic groups. Our mainstream media regularly shows stuff that relate to all people, so I think because of this, we're generally better informed.

You're right to a degree, news coverage in the US is very US focused. I've never been to Australia so I really can't comment on the news coverage there, however I have spent 4 years living in Canada. News here isn't really any more balanced. We get Canadian news with the addition of US news. There isn't more coverage of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe or South American than in the US.

I will agree that most Americans do not know a lot about Australia. I would say though that ignorance can be felt from people posting from many different countries on this board. I can feel the misinformation coming from the US, Canada, Eastern Europe & Australia (see below).

As far as Australia having many ethnic groups and the US being only Americans..... Have you ever visited the US?

You might be right about Canada. I've never been there. I would have to say that Australia is the most culturally diverse nation on earth, so I have a biased view on this to an extent... but I also live in the US for a lot of time during the year, and I'd have to say that if there is any diversity in cultures, it doesn't stick out in American culture as a whole. It does in Australia.

I'm interested in this "diversity in cultures" thing too. I am considering visiting Australia later this year and so am interested. How do you define culture and how does one decide when one country has a greater diversity of it?

I can see a very wide range of cultures here in the US by visiting a small Wisconsin farm, any ghetto, Las Vegas, and then Miami.

I can see quite a wide range here in Miami just by travelling from South Beach to the ghetto. In the space of just a few miles I can go from being surrounded by Latino music, people, and food to sitting in a crack-house surrounded by thieves and thugs. Now THAT is cultural diversity.

Let me explain my comments...

I've been to both countries, lived in both countries and intend on living in both countries forever. I do it because of personal reasons and because it's the lifestyle I enjoy.

In America, it seems to me that when any ethnic group settles in a city or town, they automatically move to wherever their own people are settled. I see a lot less of this in Australia. At the moment, I live next to a Vietnamese family to my right, and a Croatian family to my left, across the road is a Lebanese family.

The point is, that this is how it is for almost everyone in every capital city in Australia. I didn't see this in America. Because it seems to me that America; ethnically speaking, is made up of immigrants who are kind of made to become an American, holding on to their own heritage is almost taboo.

As for being forced, no I didn't say people force you to do it, it happens that way. It just happens that in order for someone to be successful in the US, you need to be an American and talk English, and drive an American car and eat Mc Donalds, listen to American music etc. If you don't, people wonder why.

The American government has a lovely way of putting people into their ethnic groups until they become successful, and generalizing within the media whenever one person from that said group, causes some kind of trouble.

I don't see this in Australia, unless the "Albanian Wing" of a detention centre is suddenly on fire. Then people and more specifically the media will aim at that one ethnic group. Otherwise, people don't give a fuck.

It still makes people cringe to sit next to a black man on a bus in the US, I've seen it in their eyes. I'm white, and of Slavic heritage so it affects me less than it does most visitors and immigrants to the US.

It's just what I've seen with my own eyes.

I live in Miami. That is not true here. Spanish is spoken everwhere here. The grocery stores have signs in Spanish and English, the Spanish book sections are large, and there are a LARGE number of restaurants that cater to Spanish speaking clientele over English. The security guards in my community don't even speak English.

And .. I know and understand why!

I was thinking the same thing. I didnt pay attention to Fox News for a long time until I started reading about them just dominating every other news agency. So I started tuning in to see what the hype was all about.

The same network that gives you such original programming as World Wildest Police Videos, COPS, When Docile Animals Attack, Simpsons, Married With Children... now give us the news.

I think for a long time, most of the major news networks targeted a more educated left leaning audience... which alienated a vast majority of Americans. Who does Fox target? Fox targets those they are best at targeting, Joe Blow American. The news is dished up fast, flashy, and put forth in a simple enough manner as to be easily grasped by your average American dipshit. Not too much extra info, no lengthy debates by boring ass intellectuals, no boring history lessons. Just simple facts put forward in an easily understood and digestable manner.

Fox nailed it on the fucking head after 9-11. Where were the cattle gonna get their news? MSNBC, those lefty cocksuckers? CNN, those uptight east coast liberal bastards? So Fox stepped in. Give the cattle what they want. Give us the news, but dumb it down and make it simple enough for Sally Sue and Billy Joe to understand. America is under attack by people who hate us, nevermind the historical and theological reasons for their hatred, they only hate us because they are jealous. America is the best, has always been the best, and will always be the best.

What I love the most about Fox is they ALWAYS bill themselves as "fair and unbalanced". They repeat it over and over like a mantra. I watch it while I work, a good 6 to 8 hours a day of it. Everything from their morning shows all the way through Cavuto, Hannity, and OReilly. I skip Cal Thomas that weasly looking bitch.

It is a work of art watching these people work. Finally the conservative right has a voice outside of Rush Limbaugh.

Its all fueled by fear. If you watch Fox all day, I would be scared to leave the damn house. The terrorists want to kill you, the liberals and communists (one in the same) want to hook your children on drugs, rap music, pornography, and teach them how to hate God.

I cant get enough of it.
