Choosing A Domain Name?

I'm probably out of date with domain names. It was important to get keywords in the name. Is it still important? So if I tried to get derekjeterny.com and created a wordpress fan site around this, would it help me in the rankings when people searched "Derek Jeter NY"? I'm just wondering how important this is anymore.

Side topic, but do any of do fan sites? Those wiki pages are so good that it would seem fan sites are useless unless you create a forum.

I have always felt fan sites were a waste of time, actual fans with sick obsessions and no life will outwork you free.

You're right; my goal would be to turn it into a money making site. The idea would be any time Derek Jeter makes the headlines his name would get googled a lot. And that would in effect bring mass visitors to my site. Now, I'm just using Jeter as an example. We could go with a Hollywood Star who gets in trouble a lot. Anyone who's going to get massive searches every once in a while.

What suggestion would you have for a worthwhile money-making site? I'm experimenting with Wordpress right now. Based on another thread I'm working towards learning Wordpress Development. I need some ideas on what kind of website I should develop.

...and then there's the whole trademark / misuse of their name consideration. :P

Exact match domains are not that beneficial as they used to be, at least for google.

if you can anticipate a phrase then yes it will work. i do it all the time but the sites are short lived when the phrase dies off. For instance I made a couple grand on a site called trumprunning.com and just put blog on auto post when the topic was a hot debate on rather or not Donald Trump would be running for president. I think I was page1 for 4-6 weeks then died off.
