Actually, the country's slang name is considered offensive to many South Americans as they are "americans" too ...

We refer to the United Kingdom as the UK.
Historically, they were called England but I am sure the Scots and Welsh would have something to say about that ...
I'll defer to someone from the UK on further explanation of that one ;)

its just misunderstanding/laziness/ignorance on the foreigners part. They just think of all people from the UK as English when England is just one 4th of the UK - Probably because England is the most dominant of the 4 countries.

The UK is made up of England, N. Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
Great Britain is just England, Scotland and Wales.
The British Isles is England, N. Ireland, S. Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Then it greats REALLY complicated when you start talking about the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, ect .. who are semi-automatous but are part of the UK.

У каждого слова есть своя этимология. Куба это остров, но провозглашение его независимым государством не меняет правил Русского Языка. То же самое и с Украиной (окраиной).
