Got a new TV, best thing I've bought in a while...

I had a 46" Sharp which was fine, but it had a fair bit of ghosting. I got the itch to upgrade and decided on a 65" Panasonic Plasma (TCP65ST60)

Was lucky to find one in stock, they're hard to find sometimes. FutureShop had 10 of them the other day, then I went to look and they were sold out maybe 2 days later.

Anyway, the thing is beautiful and is absolutely massive. I have huge floorstanding speakers and it makes them look almost normal. Watched Skyfall and it was like night and day from when I saw it before. Really big difference between this set and my old one.

I think I'm gonna watch Game of Thrones again.

Outdated technology. Although I do know they have a great picture.

But they're also heavy, hot, pricey and suck way more electricity.

Who cares about weight when it sits on a piece of furniture?
Scrutinizing a TV should always be about picture quality, and nothing can beat plasma yet.

I have 3 LCD Samsung's here, i love them but the serious viewing is done on a Panasonic Plasma..

Yup, plasmas are great. I know technically the technology is 'obselete' as they say, but for picture quality they're just superior to LCDs in the same price range. Much much richer colors & textures and they handle movement no problem, which you can't say for all LCDs.

Plasmas loose about 50% brightness after 20000 working hours i think, so long enough and in the range of the old tube TVs. An average LED TV doesn't last any longer.
Of course they don't break then normally, so you can just set the brightness level higher if it wasn't on max already.

Not true. The early plasmas were rated to have a half life of around 30,000 hours but the ones out now are rated anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 hours, just as LED's are.

Ack! Don't buy a TV right now. The new 4K's that came out about 8 months ago that were selling for more than $10,000 are now only $7000 and expected to drop below $2000 just after Christmas.

If you haven't seen a 4K TV yet they're stunning.

There's little to no content in 4K yet but movies are already shooting in the 4k format, and 4k TV's will up-convert of course.

Thought about that, but I figured this would be a nice in between step and there's rumours they're stopping production of these next month, so it's kind of now or never, hard to find etc.

Next will be an 84" 4k, but only when the price comes way down. Also, never buy the first gen anything.

Plasma TVs suck. They're like watching TV through a glass window as opposed to LCDs where the image is directly on the surface of the screen. Look at the same tv program side by side on a comparable size LCD and plasma and there's no comparison the LCD is so much a superior picture. I also can use my 52" LCD as a computer monitor in my living room.

Plasmas are hard to judge in bright stores, as they need a darker room to really shine. When I bought my 46" LCD it was the right choice, Plasmas weren't very good then. Nowadays it's different. You have to spend much more to get this quality out of an LCD or OLED.

Anyway, compared to my old LCD it blows it out of the water, and that's all that matters to me!

Prices will drop, but not that much so early. It will take a good 2 years in order to get a decent size 4k display under $2k
