Like in NY if you have a carry permit it has to be concealed, so pretty much by the time they see it shots are fired.

But if you can carry unconcealed get a Glock17

Do not EVER use a gun to scare someone. You should never draw a gun unless you plan to shoot to practice or to kill.

I pretty much want a gun to keep in the house, not so much carry it around...I dunno much about Gun laws, I guess gotta read up. I have fired a handgun once before, but that's about it.

People with this attitude are a danger to themselves and others.

If you ever have to pull a gun, I suggest you use it. When it gets to that level then it is time to fire. You are not in law enforcement so who the fuck are you trying to intimidate? The fucker who pulls a gun on me and hesitates to shoot will be the first one with 3 bullets in him.

The most menacing isn't always the best. Probably the most intimidating guns are revolvers. I still have a Smith & Wesson 686 (.357 Magnum), nickel plated. It looks scary as hell, but only has 6 rounds. There is no such thing as too many rounds so the gun I keep around for home defense is a Sig Sauer p229 (.357 Sig). It is absolutely the best pistol I have ever owned. If you can get a concealed carry permit, the p229 is also quite easy to conceal.

I don't carry a gun on me, but if I could and needed to, it would definitely be the p229.

I've heard several times that the Best protection for "in the home" is a PUMP shotgun. 12 guage would be nice.

I guess the sound of the "pump" is enough to deter some from continuing in and if they do make it in.....the wide shotgun blast should make it easier to hit them.

If that is your intention get a 12 gauge pump shot gun with the minimum legal barrel. Nothing better for home defense then the curclunk of loading a shell. And if you need to use it you will not miss either.

Actually, a shotgun is a perfect choice for home use. Mossberg 500 or a Winchester Model 12. Both the Model 12 and Mossberg 500 "Persuader" can be picked up for about $300.

Personally...I hate Glocks. Especially the 9mm's. They feel like a cheap toy when fired. IF I ever purchase a Glock...It would be a .40 but the chances of that happening are slim to none.

A first gun should have a safety and a solid feel. Glock has an odd safety it is a hinged trigger that is designed to prevent an accidental discharge. It has always made me nervous and I have been shooting handguns for 30 years.

SIG 229 is hard to beat - you can get different barrels and shoot 9mm, .357SIG and .40SW - all from the same pistol. See Bar-sto for barrels. For daily carry I prefer a light weight Smith and Wesson like the model 37. 15 oz. snubnose .38. It will get you to your 12 gauge or 229 if the need arises.

The best pistol for personal protection would be a hammerless snub nosed revolver in any decent size caliber say .38 and above.

A short barrel makes it hard for your assailant to grab the barrel without covering the end of it and putting themself in danger.

No hammer will also keep your assailant from grabbing and blocking the hammer from striking the firing pin.

A revolver instead of an auto because you want reliability.

In all likelihood when defending your life you will not need more than one shot anyways, so if you also want to carry it concealed I would recommend a 5 shot cylinder.

first of all, don't buy a glock. glocks indeed are reliable equipment in the 9mm range, but above that actually can be very dangerous. glocks above 9mm are rather prone to kb's (KABOOM). yes, they do explode. the 9mm is a smooth shooter, and a hardy weapon. relatively cheap, even.

as far as a desert eagle... great for conversation and hunting, but NOT for personal defence. why? well, yes, it has a great "scare factor", but the efficiency of use is poor. the load this weapon fires is enormous. esp. in the .50 and .440 cor-bon. if you miss with your first shot, it will take you a lot longer to recover for the 2nd round. you also have to consider the collatoral damage with such a weapon. in a night encounter, the muzzle flash of the deagle is immense, which would leave both you and your assailant temporarily blind. 2 blind guys shooting in the dark isn't a good idea. you'd also have to consider its size and weight, which ovisously wouldn't be good for concealed carry.

my personal choice, although a little more expensive then the mainstream handguns, is the HK. specifically, the .40. i'd suggest a full size, however for concealed carry they do make a nice compact. the .40 is a high-speed bullet, with less kick and good stopping power, unlike the .45 which is a slow bullet with more recoil (although all the hks fire fairly smoothly). the hk is a very dependable weapon (as shown in use by special forces - the usp). the newer hk models also offer a built-in keylock that's fairly hidden and easy to use, and a (IMHO) nicer slide release. the hks are very easy to field strip, still lightweight, and less prone to the kb of the larger caliber glocks. seriously, check these things out. the hks are generally more accurate, esp. for n00bs.

one thing to know about both the glock and hks, due to their barrel design, you have to be rather careful with your ammunition. hk will void your warranty if you use lead bullets. a lot of people at the range use an FMJ at the bottom of each clip to keep it clean, but to be safe, use all FMJ. this is more expensive, but due to the design, lead can clog the barrel, making the firearm more suseptible to a kb.

and lastly, PLEASE know how to use the firearm. i suggest you take some sort of training if you haven't already.

iroc409 Confirmed User Join Date: Jan 2003 Location: midwest side, yo Posts: 4,728	well, i guess i'll add my first of all, don't buy a glock. glocks indeed are reliable equipment in the 9mm range, but above that actually can be very dangerous. glocks above 9mm are rather prone to kb's (KABOOM). yes, they do explode. the 9mm is a smooth shooter, and a hardy weapon. relatively cheap, even. as far as a desert eagle... great for conversation and hunting, but NOT for personal defence. why? well, yes, it has a great "scare factor", but the efficiency of use is poor. the load this weapon fires is enormous. esp. in the .50 and .440 cor-bon. if you miss with your first shot, it will take you a lot longer to recover for the 2nd round. you also have to consider the collatoral damage with such a weapon. in a night encounter, the muzzle flash of the deagle is immense, which would leave both you and your assailant temporarily blind. 2 blind guys shooting in the dark isn't a good idea. you'd also have to consider its size and weight, which ovisously wouldn't be good for concealed carry. my personal choice, although a little more expensive then the mainstream handguns, is the HK. specifically, the .40. i'd suggest a full size, however for concealed carry they do make a nice compact. the .40 is a high-speed bullet, with less kick and good stopping power, unlike the .45 which is a slow bullet with more recoil (although all the hks fire fairly smoothly). the hk is a very dependable weapon (as shown in use by special forces - the usp). the newer hk models also offer a built-in keylock that's fairly hidden and easy to use, and a (IMHO) nicer slide release. the hks are very easy to field strip, still lightweight, and less prone to the kb of the larger caliber glocks. seriously, check these things out. the hks are generally more accurate, esp. for n00bs. one thing to know about both the glock and hks, due to their barrel design, you have to be rather careful with your ammunition. hk will void your warranty if you use lead bullets. a lot of people at the range use an FMJ at the bottom of each clip to keep it clean, but to be safe, use all FMJ. this is more expensive, but due to the design, lead can clog the barrel, making the firearm more suseptible to a kb. and lastly, PLEASE know how to use the firearm. i suggest you take some sort of training if you haven't already. my __________________ <a href="http://www.iroc409.com/"><img src="http://www.iroc409.com/adv/120x60.gif" border=0></a> icq: 1 7 6 4 2 0 9 6 0 Gallery templates for ONLY $25! w00t!
